| 18-3-2010 - To drink or NOT to drink...castor oil? What are your thoughts? |
My mood while writing this blog: curious |
(once again I personally am NOT trying this...I am just wondering what your thoughts are. :) )
BEFORE I EVEN SAY A WORD I WANT TO REMIND EVERYONE THAT YOU ARE FREE TO SHARE YOUR OPINION NO MATTER WHAT IT IS BUT PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE NASTY COMMENTS THAT COULD HURT ANOTHER MOMMY'S FEELINGS ABOUT THE TOPIC!! NOT EVERYONE AGREES ON THIS SUBJECT AND I DON'T WANT ANYONE UPSET IF SOMEONE DOESN'T AGREE WITH THEM. JUST REMEMBER EVERYONES SITUATIONS ARE DIFFERENT AND WE SHOULD ALL BE HERE FOR EACHOTHER NO MATTER WHAT.. :) THIS IS PURELY FOR CURIOUSITY AND WONDERING WHAT EVERYONE'S THOUGHTS ARE ON THE TOPIC. I KNOW MANY MOMS WHO ARE AGAINST IT AND MANY MOMS THAT ARE FOR IT SO I AM JUST WONDERING.
Personally I am too afraid to even try it so I don't intend to. LOL! :) Although I am excited to have Charlie here, I plan on just waiting to see when he decides to come on his own. :) But I have to admit it seems like alot of women have had success under the right circumstances. My DH talked to his nurse friend and she said..."I have been in the medical industry for 20 years, and I have seen Dr.'s tell their patients to use it and some that are firmly against it. It is NOT scientifically proven to cause baby's to have a bowel movement, and if it were so bad there would not still be professionals that still tell their patients to try it." Then she said although SHE would never try it or recommend others try it, she doesn't see anything wrong with someone trying it if they are full term, already dilated and effaced AND if their DOCTOR or MIDWIFE are the ones that gave them the go ahead. So this had me thinking....what are your thoughts? Has anyone had any first hand experience? Good? Bad? What do our Dr.'s or MW's say?
THANKS LADIES!!! I hope you are all having a wonderful evening! :)

Friday, 19 Mar Apparently castor oil doesnt work if youre not past due or due....I tried it on two different occasions at 38 weeks and 38 weeks 5 days....Nothing happened....It takes gross and made me want to throw up thats about it...I also tried nipple stimulation, pressure point stimulation, sex....Nothing worked, at 39 weeks I was brough in for an iduction I had not a single braxton hicks and only one contraction my entire pregnancy, I went in I was not effaced what so ever and closed as tight as tupperware. So my thoughts are, it doesnt work unless your body is about to give birth anyways... R-N-E-Bump -
Friday, 19 Mar My SIL's midwife told her to go ahead with the castor oil after she was 10 days late. She was told to mix it with root beer which according to my SIL wasn't too bad. She ended up doing two rounds (so two entire bottles) over the course of a day. She had the runs so bad for a couple hours but after her system cleared out the contractions started! She gave birth very late that night with no complications! TanMansMomma32 -
Friday, 19 Mar I know people who have tried it and it worked, but I personally would be to scared too. I think that our bodies were made to have babies and they will do it, just like potocien (sp) scares the crap out of me. But that is just me lol dree2010 -
Friday, 19 Mar hmmm, I dont think I would try it..lol. I heard it works for some but doesent for othees. Plus like you I too am too scared to try. MamaCas29 -
Friday, 19 Mar I did it with my last one but I was 2 days over my due date, effaced and 4 cm dilated. I took 2 tablespoons. My midwife told me it was ok to try it. I took the castor oil, had several loose stools, then started contracting....2 hours later he was born. The bonus part was...I didn't poop while pushing because it was all out of me beforehand. I think it only works when you are truly ripe and ready.... beckybear -
Friday, 19 Mar Unless there is a medical reason for you to try to induce before your body is ready and a doctor tells you to do it, I am not in favor of this. Besides it just seems like a nasty way to do it. Aren't there drugs to induce without putting you through the process of violently expelling all contents from your bowels? :) kbpc3949 -
Friday, 19 Mar Worked for me but I think you do have to be full term as another Mama said. vickiessecret -
Friday, 19 Mar I never tried it and I don't think I would either. Not unless my doctor told me to do it. I think there are better ways of trying to induce labor=)) Well I hope you little man comes soon, I'm hoping I go around 37 weeks that way I know she's full term..but we'll see what happens Good Luck *AMANDA* -
Friday, 19 Mar Ive read the way it works is to cause you to get the sh*ts and the intestinal cramping prompts the uterus to cramp also, therefore contratctions! However, i have read and seen many times that women who have taken the castor oil, thier babies have passed meconuim in-utero because it prompts them to poo also! Hope lil charile comes soon! The thing the doctor told me was to have sex and do the legs up thing because the sperm is a natrual prostiglandin (sry 4 crappy spelling) and that if u keeps ur legs up then it chills at the cervix and makes it progress. Same "active ingrediant" as the cervadil that they use to induce labor ;-) sharkey -

Friday, 19 Mar well i took it when i was 41 weeks over and it definately worked for me. i hear stories all the time of women who said it 'didnt work' etc etc but then find out that they took it when they werent even full term,so i firmly believe that if baby is ready when you take it then it will speed up the process. they actually used castor oil in hospitals back in the day to induce women, they would all get a drink of it to start off their labours, but again women who were full term or over. Here in the UK they banned it because women were taking it early in pregnancy to induce a miscarriage and then before they were term to 'get baby outta there' which caused distress and other problems for the mother and child. ASDA one of our major supermarkets had numerous law suits over it and decided to take it off their shelves, and the other big supermarkets quickly followed. they didnt want the stress of women who were taking it when they shouldnt and causing health problems. its a shame really because its made it so hard to get hold off all because of some very stupid women! i have noticed since being on this site that its more of an american thing to get sick of pregnancy a month or so beforehand. over here in the UK we count down the days till our due date and then start getting bothered with each over due day that goes past! obviously i dont mean to generalise, its just something ive found is very common on this site! i would also say about the castor oil, take it when you are 40 weeks or over, its not a nice drink to taste and so you dont want to waste it by taking it too early! best of luck with your decision! i-love-my-babies -
Thursday, 18 Mar I took it with my son an i was 2weeks over ... But it didnt do anything for me but the poops... I was going to try it with my son Decklyn (newest one) But i had to get a c scetion.. Thursday, 18 Mar It just sounds too icky, I could never do it, lol. Thought about it but could never drink it, lol. kellio -
Thursday, 18 Mar I have taken it with the go ahead from my midwife when I was pregnant with my first son. Castor oil makes you poop your brains out and you have to make sure to drink plenty of fluids. When I took castor oil it put me into active labor with the contractions and dilated me a few more cm's... needless to say my body wasn't ready to have the baby yet and everything died off and I was sent home. I will not be taking it again and I wouldn't recommend it. Hang in there!! staceylouise -
Thursday, 18 Mar Wow!! I'd be way to scared to try it...My sister tried it and got nothing!! But at my parenting classes they say it is safe and not confirmed affective, but they dont reccommend it, but only because it gives you "runny poo" lol... couldnt think of a nice way to say it.... and they have seen some ladies take it, and they say it is not a pretty sight as you dont want to spend your time on the toilet while having contractions... lol... Good luck if you do try it!! :) Mom2b85 -
Thursday, 18 Mar I'm not sure if i would personally do it, I know people who have and they had nothing negative to say about it. To each its own this is my first pregnancy so who knows what I will do lol luv4lukas -
Thursday, 18 Mar I took it! I asked other moms about it too and got a lot of mixed feedback. I took it two days before I was to get induced. I wanted things to happen more naturally and wala, it worked!! I had Lukas the day I was to be induced! I'd definitely wait a little bit longer..but its up to you girl..its your baby and its your body!
