08-1-2009 - Pain Medication OR Natural Childbirth Question!! Curious! My mood while writing this blog:
Curious!

Hi Ladies

I am sitting here wondering many things.

I was wondering for those of you that have already had your babies did you go natural, or did you get pain meds.

For those of you that haven't given birth yet will you get pain meds, or try to go natural?

Me, myself? I want to TRY and go natural, but I have low tolerance for pain so I don't know what I will actually do once that pain kicks in.

I believe that I might panic and send my mind into over drive before the actual pain kicks in and might ask for pain meds way before when and IF the time comes. I am hoping that my body will deliver her without any interference but I will not feel like less of a woman if I need assistance with pain meds.

I am so conflicted and I would love to read what all of you think.

I just saw your blog and thought I'd leave you a comment. I was terrified about the birth before going through it. I went into the hospital to be induced and my water broke on it's own which put me into labor. I made it 2 1/2 hours before I gave in and got the epidural, I went in with a plan to get the epidural and I have to say, the labor was a lot more enjoyable once I got the epidural. I could move my legs enough to help me roll over (they kept flipping me since my daughter was facing the wrong way), but I couldn't feel the ice bag they put on them to test the numbness. I had my epidural for about 8 1/2 hours before I had my daughter so I did feel pushing her and the episiotomy I got, so I think it was wearing off, but it made the actual labor so much more enjoyable, I was able to relax and visit with the people who came to see me... I would have even taken a nap if I wasn't so excited to meet my baby! :) If you can go natural yay for you! but I knew I wasn't going to make it, so I was just happy to go the 2 1/2 hours before getting it! I don't think it's a weakness at all to have pain relief, in a time when it's safe and available, if it can make the birthing experience more enjoyable, and make you feel better I say go for it!

I really have no idea how it's going to feel so I don't know if I'd be able to go natural but I'm not counting on it...no problem with pain meds whatsoever...so we'll see what happens.

id say get the pain meds, if you dont want the epi then there is other pain meds you can take till you give up and get the epi to ease a little of the pain. the only bad contractions i had was from the pitocin myself till they gave me that i was fine other than having her on a nerve that made my legs twitch like crazy lol. honestly i would tell you to have the epi, but be prepared for your back to hurt (its not untollerable) if you have the epi, mine still gets sore now but i think it was from the first idiot dr who kept poking around when my back was too swollen to figure out where it needed to be.

Take it when you think you need it. Untill then you are a woman made by God to give birth. You can do what ever you put your mind too. but I thank God for the drugs because man what a differnece it made!!! LOL

also consider that a friend of mine still has back pains from her epidural. it's not with everyone, but, you know ... another point for natural! :o) hehehe. but it's all about what makes you relaxed and able to focus on your bringing your little one into the world.

i went natural and it was great. try to imagine that there's no pain meds available and see if that helps? i don't know! i had a homebirth, so no pain med options there. hehehe. try natural and make everyone aware that this is your goal so that they can support you. by the time it gets truly unbearable, you'll probably be too close to pushing to have/want pain meds.

Girl, I had pain meds with both of my children and don't feel bad about it either. You have to do what's good for you. At the end of the day, it's you who has to deal with the pain. But every woman is different, some woman can handle the pressure of natural birth, and some can't. I can't handle that pressure so I got me some meds. I applaud those who can endure natural child birth, I just couldn't, that' wasn't for me.

HI! With my first baby I made it to 7 centimeters then got the epidural, pitocin and my water broken. All those interferences caused my labor to stop dead in its tracks so I ended up with a big fat c section. I am pregnant again and trying for natural medication free labor and birth. Everyone doesn't experience the same outcome as I did with those meds but it is best to know the side effects prior to allowing the docs to do what they want to you. I am hearing on this site that the worst part is the transition phase 8cms to 10cms. I can say from personal experience that up to 7 centimeters it felt like bad menstrual cramps and was not as bad as I had imagined. And I also have a low tolerance for pain. I am also an advocate for natural med free birth. Those drugs affect your baby too not just you.

I've delivered 3 children so far and all births have been very different.

First one was natural, but happen very fast and he was small (preemie).

Second one, ended up being natural, although I had an epidural that wasn't position correctly so I felt everything and it was the most horrible pain experience in my life, which made for a horrible delivery experience because the pain was so bad (he was a very big baby).

Third one, I had the best epidural in the world. I felt nothing...you could've cut my legs off with a butter knife and I wouldn't have known...hahaha.

I suggest if you have a low tolerance to pain, you may really consider an epidural.

If you don't want to decide on the epi until you're actually in labor, make sure you know at what point during labor they won't give it to you anymore.

Some woman feel like they're a failure if the get pain relief, but no one should no matter what type of delivery you have or had.

This time I'm having a c-section so I don't even have to worry about all that pain relief stuff, but if I wasn't, I would get my epi the second I walked into the hospital in labor. Heck, I would ask for one before labor even started :)

There's no need to be super woman when delivering your baby....trust me, if you can, take the meds :)

Honey get the pain medicine, the way god intended. LOL!! Don't think your less of a woman for taking the drugs, thats what they are there for. Oh and far as that crap about someone saying they didn't want their child drugged... THAT IS BULL!! I had 2 boys and Im preg with my girl now. Both of my children were wide eyed, alert, and looking around. NO epi made them drugged. Im getting the epi as soon as they'll let me!!

Hey girl I have had three natural and three medicated.I am not going to lie labor is very painful not trying to scare you but I have a very high tolerance for pain. I almost didn't make it through it but the one good thing about natural labor is after it is all over with it is the kind of pain you can't remember what it felt like other than it hurt. I mean that is how it was for me. I was sixteen when I had my first son natural and he came right out. I had a great labor and delivery nurse and she was there the whole time as well as my support people. It depends on you as a person . Labor can be so hard and painful that when it comes down to crunch time you have nothing left to push with you totally exhausted and all you want to do is sleep. Then on the other hand you can get medication and be so numb that you don't feel anything and your pushes even though you aren't tired are not effective . I know im' really helping right . I guess when it comes down to it you know your body. you know what you can and can not deal with. What ever makes you feel comfortable is whats best you know.

I TRIED NATURAL WITH MY SON BUT I WOKE UP IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT AT THE HOSPITAL CURSING FROMT HE SHARP PAINS AND MY MOM WAS WITH ME AND SHE JUST SAT THERE SAYING "WELL THATS ALL APART OF BEING PREGO, WELCOME TO MOTHERHOOD"..WTF!! I NEEDED HER SUPPORT NOT SMART COMMENTS.LOL!!! MY MOM AND SISTER SAID THAT THEY WERE GIVING SUMTHING TO PUT THEM IN A TWILIGHT ZONE WHICH MEANS YOU DAMN NEAR SLEEP TRYING TO PUSH THE BABY OUT. DONT ASK HOW THEY DID BUT THEY WERE "KNOCKED OUT" BC THEY CUDNT DEAL WITH THE PAIN. SO UMMM IDK BEAUTI!!! ITS UP TO YOU AND WHAT YOUR BODY CAN HANDLE AS FAR AS PAIN. I KNOW THAT IM GETTING AN EPIDURAL WITH THIS ONE. MY BEST FRIEND WENT NATURAL WITH BOTH OF HER GIRLS AND SHE SURVIVED

I delivered 3 kids all natural and it was hell. I am having my 4th and I am thinking that I will get an epidural.I have worked in labor and delivery and when women get an epidural your body is able to relax and do what it has to do. Sometimes once you get closer to delivering you may feel pain but not all. Also sometimes the epidural works so good it makes it hard to push because you have no feeling and you think your pushing but really doing nothing. Some women think if they have something for pain they are less of a women which is not true, just given birth period makes us 100% women. Well good luck in whatever you do.

im deff gonna go for the epi, im not gonna get it just for the sake of it. i mean if i CAN handle it then obviosuly ill go natural (maybe just gas n air) but if i cant handle it i have no probs getting the epi :) except the fact ill be scared to death of the injection lol. yay for pain relief, best invention haha xx

aarons-mom - Friday, 9 Jan
i'll go natural. i had natural with my first baby. it does hurt but hey the hurt is all worth it once u hear and see your baby screaming! but our experiences vary so good luck to whatever decision u make girl. Take care, God bless u and your muffin girl. =)

shug1stbebe - Friday, 9 Jan
I know I don't like pain so I've already told my Dr to have my Epi locked and loaded when I get to the hospital. I don't think using drugs makes you "less" of a woman, its a personal choice.

adnorel - Friday, 9 Jan
I'm Epi all the way and Demerol, LOL My first one was induced though and they say that pain is worse...who knows but I don't like pain.

myliltiger - Friday, 9 Jan
you know my answer.....natural all they way. they asked me twice and i said no. i was screaming like a banchee...lol it hurt but 12 hours later i delivered him bright eyed and alert. not a drug in his system entering the world. just how i wanted. my gift to him. i keep focusing on am=n ultrasound foto i had of him.
i wish you the best either decision you make. just know after its over to know you got thru it is one of the most empowering feelings ever.
god bless

I tried with my first, but I ended up with the epi after 14 hours of contractions and was so happy I did. Second two I got the epi from the very beginning and loved it. I plan on getting an epi with this one also. Don't feel like a failure or anything if you get the meds, especially if you have a low pain tolerence, I do too. At least I tried once. Don't plan on trying again, lol! Good luck!
