| 30-3-2009 - The first 4 weeks | My mood while writing this blog:Amazed but shattered! |
Wow! I cannot believe how quickly the last 4 weeks have flown by! So scary to think that in another 4 weeks, Ben will be 2 months old!!
A lot has happened over the past month. Ben surprised us by arriving a week early, we were readmitted on day 5 so that he could have phototherapy for 2 nights to treat his jaundice + then he developed thrush on his tongue which caused breastfeeding to become increasingly difficult! He must be getting the milk though - his weight gain has been brilliant!
| Birth | 7lb 8oz |
| 5 days | 7lb 6oz |
| 1 week, 4 days | 7lb 12oz |
| 2 weeks, 4 days | 8lb 9oz |
| 3 weeks, 5 days | 9lb 8oz |
The first few days of feeding were agony. I said to James that I would rather go through childbirth again than breastfeed! My nips were sore, blisters appeared + they would bleed during feeds. Things started to improve after a week then BAM..Thrush appears on Ben's tongue. Feeding is shit again. The problem is getting him to latch on properly. Once that happens, he sucks well + feeding is fairly comfortable. But he sucks sucks sucks before he's even latched, which means that his mouth is never wide enough. This makes me sore + Ben becomes frustrated because I keep taking him off + trying again. I asked the Health Visitor about expressing so that he can have his night feed from a bottle (this seems to be the time when I get the most upset, probably because we are both tired). She advised me to wait until the thrush has cleared up to see if he feeds well again. I've been using Daktarin oral gel on Ben's tongue for over a week + we're finally seeing some improvement. Hopefully this time next week the thrush would have gone + feeding will be easier. I really hope so. Does anyone else have problems getting their babies to latch on properly?
Other than the feeding issues, I'm really enjoying being Ben's Mummy. We've been on lots of trips out + about (which have kept me sane!). Ben passed his newborn hearing test last Tuesday + we finally registered his birth this morning. He exists!!
I'm starting to get back to normal (ish) now. I can't believe how much weight I gained during pregnancy. I went from 10st 3lb to 13st 4lb!!! I'm now down to 11st 5lb + can squeeze back into my jeans. I have finally managed to do the top button up! Woo!!! The stretchmarks are looking terrible. No worries though, I never was one for baring all on the beach!
Anyway, I feel like I've gone on quite enough.
Congratulations to all the new Mummies + Good luck to those about to pop!
Love from Becca and Benjamin x
