19-6-2009 - The fight is on!!! annoyed and aggravatedMy mood while writing this blog:
annoyed and aggravated

I have been trying to find a way get out of my glucose test. I am hypoglycemic which is the exact opposite of diabetic and CAN'T eat sugar/sweets. None of relatives (my parents both come from large families) have diabetes, most being very thin and hypoglycemic too. None of my cousins, siblings, grandparents, or great-grandparents have had it either. The 8 risk factors for GD are:

1) Being older than age 25,
2) Have a family history of gestational diabetes (ie mother, grandmother or sister had it),
3) Family history of diabetes,
4) Being overweight. - body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher,
5) Race (black, Hispanic, American Indian or Asian)
6) You have previously given birth to a large baby (weighing over 4.5kg/9lb 14oz)
7) You have previously had a stillbirth,
8) Have polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

Furthermore,
the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) in London doesn't recommend routine screening because there is not enough evidence to support testing every pregnant woman to identify a high risk of diabetes. But some doctors and midwives test urine for sugar at antenatal visits and may offer a glucose tolerance test if they are concerned about diabetes. I have NEVER failed one of these tests, pregnant or not.

When they tested me with my daughter three years ago, I threw up within 20 minutes and then passed out, so they couldn't get an accurate test on me anyway. It took me days to recover. This is ONLY due to MY condition, and not a normal reaction for anyone else. SO...this time I called the doctor and asked for a pass, since I have only one of the 8 risk factors (I am over 25) and have no one to take care of me or my daughter afterwards. They said no, that EVERYONE is required to take it. As a patient (plus the history from last time), I thought I had the right to refuse any test or treatment, as long as I signed a waver......I am still planning to fight it though.....I will keep you updated as to what happens.

Good luck. I agree with you and feel that it would be more harmful to you and your baby for you to have this test done. Plus with an extended u/s they can measure your baby. If there's no cause for concern based on the babies size then it doesn't seem that there would be any reason to put yourself through something that unnessesary.
