This is the picture story of Kara from newborn part time cloth diapering to full time diaper free.
When Kara was born we had:
3 x-small Thirsties covers with 2 Thirsties liners
6 work at home mom made pocket diapers
2 med prowraps
1 onesize WonderWrap
3 packs of prefolds.
In the begining I had to wash diapers every other day, around three months it went to once a week and by five months I was only washing a x-small load once a week. By 7 months I would only have 1-2 diapers to wash a week and we decided that we would go full time diaper free! Kara has not wore a diaper since she was 8 months old and has 1 or less misses a week!
I loved using cloth diapers. Even though we only used them for a short time they were well worth it.
Here we go....
3 days old. Daddy holding Kara with just a prefold in his hands. For the first few week we held Kara with just a prefold under her instead of on her. It helped us to learn her potty cues so we could respond instantly to them.
Mommy holding sleeping Kara at 3 days in a pinned prefold. We found out quickly that Kara never peed while sleeping. She would always wake or squrim before peeing.
Almost a week old, daddy holds Kara with just a pocket diaper under her. Its not closed so daddy can tell right away when she pees.
7 days old. Grandma holds Kara in a Thirsties cover with a prefold inside.
Getting kisses from brother, part of the cord still attached in my super soft pockets.
2 weeks old. Nursing in a pocket diaper. Mom with poop on her shirt :) A true ECing mom!! haha

All ready to go in my pocket diaper. The velcro on these didnt work great and we had to have a onsie over them but they were sooo soft.

Mommy isnt afraid of pee like daddy. Mommy doesnt need a backup since finding out Kara doesnt pee while sleeping.

Fast forward to now.. While Kara may be diaper free we are working on potty independence. She still needs help and while I dont mind helping we practice getting on and off the potty, dressing and undressing before and after going potty and signing/using words to tell people she needs to pee or going to the potty to let us know.

If u don't mind me asking,isn't it more hassle keep having to hold a baby over somewhere to pee/poop? Or does that not bother you? I'm starting to think that I must be really lazy because I just don't get it. Not that it's meant to trivialize what you are doing. Are there many people doing this now? I had enough trouble trying to watch my old dog for clues as to when he needed to go let alone trying with my baby,who has very big messes sometimes even with a diaper on!!!

I was thinking about the "all-in-ones," but with your pictures, I can see that "prefold inserts" may really actually be better. And you're right about the drying faster.

lol that is so cool! i'm doing potty training with sydney, but i'm kind of lax with it, i should probably get off my ass and get to it. I should teach her to sign me to go potty, since she can't talk yet. Btw, i love those leg warmers you have on Kara! They're so cute!

How did you learn this method? I find it really interesting and would love to do it with my baby. I have a 15 month old son right now that really missed out and is STILL in diapers! Please enlighten me!! Thanks.
