10-8-2009 - 3 Hour Glucose Test

My mood while writing this blog:

Jordan's sugar test did not go well. After the first hour her sugar registered 200. She was feeling quite sick at the one hour mark so they told her what her test results were. The nurse saved blood from her draw and tested it with a glucometer. Second draw was 156 and third draw was 54 and she was ready to pass out. They quickly gave her orange juice and sent her home to eat. By time we got to her house she was shaking and definately not able to think clearly. She couldn't even unlock the door. I am staying with her right now because Nathan is working 2nd shift. He won't be home until after 11:00 p.m. She has taken a shower and a nap since and seems to be feeling better. If anyone knows what these results mean, please let us know. I do know that the time she almost passed out about 8 nurses were assisting her. I hope we don't have to wait too long for the results to come back from the lab. The doctor is suppose to call tomorrow. I hope that this is not a diagnosis that will require insulin. I was on insulin for about 14 years. She hates this idea. Maybe just a dietician and medicine. Please pray for Jordan and Lilly. They appreciate it.

I really haven't heard of any pregnant girls who fail the glucose test having to take insulin. However, she may be told no sugar and be put on a strict diet. I am sorry she had such a bad experience with it and glad you were with her. From what I know of it, this can happen to anyone during pregnancy , it is something caused by the fetus and the body and not always something that can be prevented. But the condition can be controlled by diet usually and goes away when you have the baby.

I must agree with allynne7. Try to make sure she carries a snack with her at all times. No skipping meals, for mommy! :) She should try to eat something every 4-6 hours while she's awake to keep her blood sugar stable. Complex carbohydrates (starches) are a better choice than sweetened sugary things, because they don't make your blood sugar spike so high (200 is pretty high), and then drop so low (after the body tries to compensate by secreting insulin). Hopefully diet-control of her blood sugar is all she needs. She's clearly able to make insulin (that's why her blood sugar dropped to 54), so I don't think she'll need insulin shots.

She and baby are in my thoughts...poor thing. I know the passing out part and shaking from the sugar drop is the most horrible thing in the world being hypoglycemic myself. If she feels that way again have her eat fruit or white bread along with drinking some juice. The sugar in juice will get eaten up quickly that's why she should have something (food wise) that will last in her system longer. And 5-8 small meals per day should help with all the nausea, shaking, headaches, loss of concentration, and anything else she may feel when her sugar count is off. But the symtoms you described are exactly what I feel when my sugar drops. We go through so much to bring these little ones in the world! I hope she feels better soon and you get the results quickly.

My Glucose Test came back 95 my doctor said that it was just fine i will pray for Jordan and Lilly that everything will be fine. :)
