| 07-6-2008 - Glucose 6 Phosphate Dehydrogenase Deficiency what???? | My mood while writing this blog:Ok |
Anyways....so I go to the doctor and he said that my lil man had glucose 6 phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency of also known as g6pd. What this is exactly is a deficiency of the red blood cells. I will give the simple version of what it is as it is REALLY COMPLEX.
We all have something in our blood cells that helps our body deal with certain stresses. This can be getting sick, or in my lil ones situation, being born. So my lil man lacks this in his blood cells, so when he comes into high stress levels, it causes it blood cell to break, and turns into bilirubin which is jaundice. This now explains why his levels were going up and down. Doc said that birth is very stressful on the baby's body.
Anywhoo....doc said that my lil man will grow up fine without any complications as long as he stays away from certain things. He is not allowed to take Aspirin, fava beans, Excerdrin just to name a few. If he does ingest these, it will cause his jaundice to come back no matter of how old he may be
Im happi that I now know what was causing him to have jaundice for so long, and that it is not major problem. On the bright side, the deficiency fights against cancer, cardiovascular diseases, malayria, and sickle cell anemia just to name few. I guess there is a positive to every negative
