13-11-2009 - Epidural confusedMy mood while writing this blog:
confused

Why is my obgyn pushing for me to get an epidural?

Let me just say that I've had 3 natural births, no meds, and I didn't die (kinda drastic but you know what I mean). A woman's body is made for this and it's all natural. It's temporary.

That said, I am really confused.
I've made up my mind about a natural birth, but each time I go for a checkup, I get very wide-eyed looks when I say I'm going natural.
I get "would you pull a tooth without anesthesia? It's the same thing."

I don't get the comparison.

Gosh, pain relief vs. pain - I'm not an idiot, I would rather pain relief, of course!

BUT there are too many side effects and 'ifs' with an epidural.
And because many have had positive experiences with epidurals, does not make it less of a risky procedure for me.
It's still a needle going in too close to my spinal cord for any comfort.
It's not being able to walk or move around during labor.
It's laying down that's not the natural birthing position.
It's the story I was told (from a patient in my obgyn's office) of backache for a year after.
It's the woman (from TLC's Baby Story) who couldn't walk for 6 weeks after her epidural.

Murphy's Law so applies to me.
If anything can happen, it'll happen to me.
Well let's just say that it has many times.

And so the question remains, what is wrong with someone who wants to go for a natural birth? What does it take away from anybody?

Hey there! This is my first pregnancy and i am very committed to going all natural. So far the midwives at the hospital have said that they will support this which is great...i am yet to talk this through with my OBGYN. At my next appointment i will be talking about it with him so fingers crossed he is supportive, if not TOO BAD!! lol. I think everyone is different these days and think that because it is offered and so available they should just have one. I have had friends that would not consider having as baby without medication and other that prefer natural...either way it is to the individual and that is all that matters. Good For you i say! xo
