27-1-2009 - Pre Baptism class organizing stuff and thoughtsMy mood while writing this blog:
organizing stuff and thoughts

Pre-Baptism class went fine despite it being from 7 - 9 on a worknight. There were about a dozen couples who are all first time parents or about to be first time parents. We didn't know Deacon Lou very well until know since we usually deal/talk with Father Walt or Sal or Doug, but he was very sincere and kind. 2 male married parishioners led the meeting/discussion.

Bryan of course had his "catholic defenses" up but overall I thought that they did a good job conveying that while the Catholic church does want the children to be raised Catholic, that the main emphasis is on the Baptism ceremony as being something real. It should be our recognition, and that of the Godparents who we select to mark our commitment and the official beginning of our child's spiritual journey. The church wants to make sure that people who ask to have their child Baptized are not doing it because it's the social norm or expected as with (sadly) some of our friends that had a christening, did the picnic, cake, party etc... and then have not given their child any/much spiritual guidance, support or opportunities since then - Catholic or not.

It is my hope that giving our child spiritual guidance will give them inner strength and let them know their God is there for them and with them every step of the way even if we are not. I also want our child to feel like they have and should hold themselves to a higher standard than our ever lacking society and especially their peers when they are being cruel or just plain stupid.

I teared up when Deacon Lou reassured me that if we had a sick newborn or one that was born with severe complications, he would come and baptize them morning, noon, or night. He also reassured Bryan that he has signed someone's name who was chosen to be a God parent but was stationed in Iraq or who couldn't make the trip from another state (if Bryan decides to select his best friend Matt who lives in Hawaii currently).

My cousin Rachel gladly accepted my request to be the God mother. She has and is doing a beautiful job raising her and Rob's daughter to be a kind, considerate young lady. Not just going through the motions of going to church each week. Jessica has meticulous manners and was encouraged, but did so willingly use her own money to go to Build a Bear and make a toy for the neighbor boy who has terminal cancer. Although it is not required - the God parents do not automatically default to the people who have to raise a child if something happens to the parents. Still there is little doubt that when the time comes, we will put Rachel and Rob as down in our wills as guardians in case of the worst. The are financially solid, have room for another child and I know they wanted more children, but Rachel had a terrible time carrying Jessica and had a complete hysterectomy a few years later. She is strong, very capable, and wise beyond her 41 years. Rob is a wonderful father and still finds time with a busy job, putting Jess first, to volunteer as a big brother.

Now to happier thoughts!

We bought a new vanity for our bathroom, counter, sink etc and it's all been sitting in the "guest " bedroom for over a year....(we officially start calling it the nursery after our 20 week scan next week is all good). So we went out to Lowes and Home Depot and bought the remaining items to do the remodel for the bathroom (goodbye Florida/last adult trip, hello $1,200 in materials). Our carpenter is coming in about 3 weeks and the bath will be done in 4 - 5 days. Will save Bryan a ton of time from trying to do all himself. Of course we will still do demo...fun! What Laddie and his son can do in a week would take us months. New tile, travertine counter, new window, 1/2 wall by the toilet...new toilet! We are getting one that is a super flusher since we think that toilet could see a lot of GI Joes/coins, toilet paper...lord knows what that rascal baby is going to try to shove in it.

Bryan should have the pantry remodel done by next Tuesday when the gun safe arrives - no worries about accidents with a little one around. Finish the window casing in the family room and then it's on to the nursery. We are pretty proud of ourselves - when we bought the house 4 yrs ago and painted that room, we went with light green walls, white crown molding. The room is perfectly beautiful neutral for a baby, it reminds me of springtime. We will just get the carpet cleaned and hang a few pictures and shelves....ta da! Oh, new ceiling fan since the old one is U-G-L-Y and also I want to have the new one on the low setting most of the time since I've been reading about good air circulation and SIDS prevention.

This kid is really helping us tie up a million loose ends and projects. What a gift! Thank you baby!
