24-7-2008 - Shhh, it's a secret

So, we went to dinner last night at an Italian restaurant. And out of the blue, Shawn decides we should talk about names. He's been digging Asher and Mason. I like them, but hate the nicknames (Ash and Mace? Kinda violent). But they're so in right now. And I like OLD names. The names I've been digging on are Finnian and Augustin.

Shawn: "So, I like Finnian, but I know you're not huge on that one any more."
"Yes, yeah. I really like it. It's in my top two."
"What's the other one?"
"Augustin."
"Yeah, I really like that one, too."
No mention of Asher or Mason.
So he says we should get a middle name going for both of those. "How about Robert? For either?"
"REALLY?" Okay, everyone on my dad's side has Robert. My grandpa is Robert. One of his daughters married a Bob and they had a Bobby. Another daughter (my aunts) married Robert and had Bobby. In addition, 3 or 4 cousins have Robert as a middle name. Oy.
"Well, Augustus was MY grandpa's name, so I thought we should but yours in there. Augustin Robert. But Finnian Robert is good, too."
I sit back and think a little bit. How could kids be terrible with these names? I almost snort Sprecher rootbeer out of my nose (p.s. WHY would you serve this to me in a huge pilsner glass? Every person walking by our table shoots me nasty looks). "FINN BOB! We could call him Finn Bob!"
"Oh no. Auggie Bobby." I concede that it sounds like Ricky Bobby, the racecar legend a la Will Ferrell.
We also like James for a middle name, but his brother, Jim, ruined it. He named his son Keenan James. So he patted himself on the back. Why should we do the same?
Then Shawn sprouts up, "My mom's uncle was Palmer. I really like that for a middle name."
"ARE YOU KIDDING ME??" Two tables turn to stare at me. What could this jerk have done to piss off that really pregnant lady? So I throw on a smile to show that it's all in good humor. "What did he do? Palmer. Well, at least he's not all thumbs! No way, the jokes would roll in. Promise me that if I die in childbirth, you will not name this poor boy Palmer. Oh my God."
"Come on, Jen. I was Shawn Paul Meudt (pronounced MIGHT). Shawn might p? I got through it. He'd get through it. I really don't think it's that bad."

Well, I've been thinking about it. I guess Palmer's not THAT bad. But then we've got two shot-outs from his side. I'm not crazy about Robert, either. To tell the truth. But we'll save that battle for another day. Tonight I want him to paint my toenails, so I'm not rocking THAT boat!

Palmer isnt that bad...just reminds me of some baseball player i think....I really like James :0) Also Mason isnt tooooo bad :)
