My mood while writing this blog: sleepy |
Okay, so his name's not Jack, it's Augustin, but...
Our little dude ate mangoes last night for the first time. You'd think we'd been starving him the way he went after them... I NEVER! He cleaned off the spoon EACH time, NO mess on his face, hands out of the way. It was like, "GET THIS AMBROSIA INTO MY BODY IMMEDIATELY!" Funny boy. No real surprise, though, as Shawn goes gaga for mangoes... in fact, I'm not sure Augustin would get the whole serving of pureed fruit if I had Shawn feed it to him! I gave him a bath and must not have done an impeccable job. Shawn came home and found a "booger" on his eyelid. I didn't have the heart to tell him that I thought it was mango puree!
I went to Whole Foods yesterday after work and picked up the supplies for our next step in babyfood. Last time I bought all the stuff at our local Co-Op (Willy Street): Bananas, pears, avocado, squash, and sweet potatoes. He's not a huge fan of the "Vit A" veggies, but if you mix them with his FAV, pears, then he'll eat it with aplumb (I'm loving on that word right now!). I've also picked up organic brown rice and millet from Woodman's (employee owned HUGE grocery store in parts of Sconnie). Tried out the brown rice puree last night and he was not digging it... I think it wasn't pureed enough, but as much as my wee Cuisinart could do, bless it's little motor!
So the new foods (some of which he can't have yet, but they're helping keep my freezer cold!) are frozen: spinach, mango chunks, peas. Fresh: apples (sauced 'em last night), papaya, nectarines, carrots. Good thing I bought two bags of frozen mango! The thing about buying frozen, that I totally forgot about, is you aren't supposed to refreeze stuff. So I'm going to have to puree those things up each time I want to serve them. Whereas everything else I'm bulk processing and freezing down into ice cube trays (my mom got me the SWEET OXO ice trays for Christmas: they've got a lid that slides on and it makes smaller cubes... the half-moon shaped ones, which I've always truly loved!). I'm wondering if I can/shouldn't use a coffee bean grinder to do this? I have a 4 cup cuisinart and really don't feel like cleaning the cup, blade, lid, AND wiping off the base each time I want to feed Jaws some mango!
I have to say that Whole Foods produce isn't THAT much more than Woodman's stuff if you factor in that it's a. organic and b. looks so much better than Woodman's stuff! For instance: Gala apples at Whole Foods were $1.99/lb. They're $3.99 at Woodman's right now. Mangoes were 2 for $3... I think that's nearly equivalent to Woodman's. The co-op's fruit is AMAZING, bar none, but it's mostly seasonal. That's great, if you can eat whatever you want. But when you're working from a book to set guidelines on what kiddos should and should NOT have, it's a lot harder (ie. they don't have papayas!). It's also a bit more expensive since non-members have a blanket 10% added on at the register. (side note: man, I'm chugging this tea this morning!)
Breastfeeding is going great. A is going through a stage where he pops on and off the breast about 5 times... taking the "candy raisin" with him each time. YOWCH. So recently, after 3 pop-offs, the bra flap goes back up. If he wants more he can have the other side... but 3 in a row and you're out again! He usually does this if my milk's not letting down quickly enough for him or he's already had a good drink and is more interested in the comings and goings of the dog.
Last news is that I'm picking up some signs to start using around the house. I found a great suggestion for breastmilk, as the ASL signs are all down near the chest; not great if you're doing extended BF and your 1 year old keeps tugging at the chest (Why, whatever could HE want??). The sign for mother is thumb on chin (right hand) and your hand open into "5" position (think: 5... 5 dollar.... 5 dollar footlooooong). The sign for milk is a closed fist out in front of you slightly opening and closing (milk the cow, ladies!). I want him to have a sign when he wants cow's milk, and still think this could be vulgar when referring to me! So we're combining mother and milk... so thumb on chin and milk the cow! http://lifeprint.com/asl101/ is a great site and has a link for dictionary as well as "baby's first 100 signs." We're doing a "C" pulsating (imagine grasping a cup, releasing, grasping, releasing) for Cubbie. Using mother, father, and for Jesi our sitter, we'll just be signing "J" (that one may be hard to recognize?). But I've already told her that if he signs, eventually, for breastmilk, to take out one of the pumped bottles... if he doesn't seem interested, he may just need some cuddling! May be a little rough on the guy at first, recognizing that breastmilk comes from mama and a bottle... and that it doesn't mean "cuddle at a loved-woman's chest." But kids seem to get these things pretty quick!
Okay, well, I may just be off getting another cup of tea soon! Getting a Town and Country red wagon today ($25) and 12 Chinese prefolds (barely used) for $20 (retail $4 each at our local shop) off of Craigslist deals. So excited. And Augustin turned 6 months old last night... hooray! Hit the drop-off for highest statistical risk SIDS (I am a sucker for stats). But we've already done SO much to try to prevent that so I was only really worried his first month (which, it turns out, is nearly SIDS free due to babe's frequent waking, so I was scared for naught). Steps we've taken: no smoking in house (Shawn's never been allowed to do that in the house... now he has to "gum it" and wash his hands each time he comes in from outside; tough habit as it's about -20 here right now!), co-sleeping and breastfeeding (both increase the # of times kiddo wakes up at night; SIDS is thought to be an awakening disorder), having a ceiling fan in the room, and sleeping kiddo a little "chilly" (no bundling). Though... last night I woke up and felt under him (checking for diaper leaks, one thing I do whenever I offer him the breast at night) and it was SOAKING wet. But only above his waist. By his head it was like someone dumped a cup of water. I think it was sweat! So I slid the towel under him (yes, we keep a towel handy at all times; you have to when sharing a bed with an infant!) and pulled the covers down to his waist. Then it was time to get up and go to work. His 6 month dr. appointment is this afternoon. Can't wait to see how much beef is on this steer!

Saturday, 21 Feb jeez, you are one admirable lady. Pureeing food, breastfeeding, working, learning & teaching Augustin signs, shopping, & who knows what else...I'm trying to figure out when you even have time to write blogs :) I can only hope to have that much energy in 6 months!
