01-12-2008 - Telling our family/first ultrasound Bummed and excited...My mood while writing this blog:
Bummed and excited...

Well, we told both sides of our immediate family this past week over our Thanksgiving get-togethers using the t-shirt idea. My husband's side saw my nephew's t-shirt right away and was absolutely ecstatic, which was fun. His mom was particularly thrilled, especially since she asked us on our engagement night five years ago when she can expect grandchildren from us! I suppose it was about time! Telling my side of the family went a little differently. My oldest sister (I have two sisters) is having some infertility issues, so it was extremely awkward to share the news. Most of my family was excited, but refrained from showing much enthusiasm in deference to my sister. She put on a brave face, but I know she was crushed. No one asked me about my doctor's appointment, or how I told my husband or any of the other fun questions you're usually asked. Oh, well. It was a tough situation and I'm hoping my sister will have some baby news of her own soon!

On a lighter note, my sister-in-law used to be an ultrasound tech (now a stay-at-home mom) and her husband (my husband's brother) is in the medical field, so we snuck up to the hospital to have my first ultrasound! It was incredible! She said everything looked great and he/she is progressing just as he/she should! The baby is just over 1 inch long and we saw the little legs move! The heartbeat was 165-175 per minute, which is normal, too. It was really fun! My sister-in-law is also due in February, so she did an ultrasound on herself while we were there. It was amazing to see her little girl. I could see the four chambers of her little heart, five little toes, etc. And, she was sucking her thumb and yawned! Incredible! I can't wait to see our baby at that stage! Our official ultrasound is scheduled for December 17th, so it will be interesting to see how much has changed by then.

Anyway, all for now!

Congratulations on your U/S! I had infertility issues too, so I know both sides of hearing everyone else good news that they are pregnant, but also being pregnant around other who can't. It is a difficult & ackward situation. Sounds like your family handled it okay. I loved your idea of letting your nephews break the news! Best wishes!!!
