28-7-2008 - epidural? anxious! My mood while writing this blog:
anxious!

So lately I've been thinking about how I want to give birth. The thought of me going natural is just insane! haha, there's no way I could do that! But I just really want to know the for real facts from the experienced mommies! How bad are epidurals? I'm DEATHLY afraid of needles, like I hate getting blood drawn, IVs, anything! I'm wondering if an epidural is going to freak me out because I won't be able to feel my legs! I suppose I'm a big whimp, but I just know that I'm going to have an epidural, I just want to make sure I know a little of what I'm getting myself into! haha. I've told myself a million times that an epidural is going to be nothing compared to natural birth pains, and after having lots of uncomfortable contractions and epidural should be cake! My sister said they stick a tube up your spine..ahhh that's GOTTA hurt! I know I sound like a crazy person and I just need to suck it up, I just want to know the facts from women who've done this before! thanks all! week 30 tomorrow! sooo excited! :) Loving every minute of this pregnancy these days!

get an epidural!! It's wonderful. I too am extremely afraid of needles and have fainted a few times. The thing is that you don't even see it cause it's behind you! Just don't watch a video of one being done, cause that's what I kept picturing in my mind (bad) you don't feel a thing when they put it in except pressure. Before getting my epidural I had stadol (through IV) and it was the worst thing I've had. I will NEVER do that again. It didn't take the pain away, just made me feel so sick and like I was drunk. I had to keep my eyes closed so I wouldn't throw up. Get an epidural! good luck girl. It will all work out.

About the epidural, I had one with my first and didn't even feel anything. The contractions were so bad at that point that I didn't care, and I absolutely HATE needles. I always get nervous before I get blood taken, and IVs are the worst. I would say that getting my IV put in was worse than the epidural....I swear, I'm a total weenie and it was just fine for me. Wish it wouldn't have worn off right before delivery, but that's a different story, lol!

hey i've been thinking about the same thing so i asked my aunt who's an RN at a hospital and she's had 3 kids too and she said she only had an epidural with her first baby and it was horrible. she said that it didn't work right and instead of numbing her from the waist down, that it numbed her whole right side and she felt all the pain on her left side. after asking a couple other people, that's a fairly common thing to have happen. my aunt told me that there's other ways they can give you pain killers (in an IV). you're going to have an IV to keep you hydrated anyways most likely and they can just hook it all up together so it's only one poke. but if you do get an epidural, she said it's best to get it numbed beforehand.

Trust me after feeling a real contraction the epidural will be your best friend. It's a prick in the back. Hurt for a second but nothing major. You can do it. The best part is you can't look while it's going in so it doesn't hurt that bad.

I got an epidural with Faith and they numbed the needle injection area first. I did not feel much of anything. The only downside was the hospital was a teaching hospital and my anastesiologist was a resident. My husband told me he could not find the spot and he kept putting the needle in and taking it back out of the catheter. I could not feel this and my back was to him of course so I could not see what was going on. Then the real doctor had to come in and he got it in there in one shot. It was my first experience so I did not know it was not susposed to take that long. So if you write a birth plan you may want to specify that you don't want any student doctors. Lol. I remember when I felt the medicine doing its job and it tingled in my legs for about 3 seconds. It felt cool like vicks vapor rub being rubbed onto my legs or something. Well thats my experience. I am sure everyones is different. Labor pain was not as bad as I thought. I spent 9 months horribly dreading the labor and it only felt like bad menstrual cramps. I got the epidural at 7 centimeters dilated.
