My mood while writing this blog: Ok |
(continued from Charley's birth story...) Charley got to come back as her lungs were working great. I nursed her and she went to sleep in my arms before returning to the nursery. Then the doctor helped me birth the two placentas, which went smoothly. We got set up in our room, and I began to relax. Both Hailey and Charley ended up needing the be placed under an oxygen hood to help their little lungs. Charley recovered almost immediately, and was only on an IV with antibiotics from then forward. Hailey continued to have lots of lung issues. She also had an IV with antibiotics. Hailey's oxygen was turned up to 35%, but after a day and a half, her pediatrician advised me that she was going to be sent to another city (4-5 hours away) where a NICU was available that could care for her. I was devastated! Charley was constantly improving, but my Hailey had to go away! I finally quit crying about an hour later, and realized that this was simply what she needed to get better. I spoke with her doctor again, who assured me that she wasn't in danger at the moment, and was being transferred "just in case she needs more help" as the hospital we were at wasn't able to provide more than an oxygen hood. She was evac-ed out on Wednesday, 1:30pm, and arrived at her new NICU at 4 pm. We were given the # there, and urged to call as often as we wanted to. So of course, I did! lol... When she left, she had been turned up to 60% in her hood, and was getting tired-out trying to open her lungs with each breath. When she arrived, they turned her down to 35%, though it went up to 50% from there. She never ended up needing any of the other medical interventions she went there for, and just continues to get better. Some of the interventions possible would have included: CPAC (positive airflow so her lungs never fully collapsed with an exhale), Surfactant (to be administered to help coat her lungs), and Intubation (if she became so tired that she just couldn't breathe on her own anymore.) Because Charley and I were still in the hospital here, my hubby stayed with us so we could all go together when we left for Hailey. As of today, Hailey is completely off her oxygen hood, is eating (through a tube down to the stomach) almost 20 ccs every 3 hours, and is having her IV turned down as her feedings go up. We're packing up this morning to go pick up the kiddos from Grandma's house (2 hour drive) and after a break, driving on down to Hailey (another 2-3 hours.) When we get back, I'll let everyone know how it went.
