09-9-2009 - Cervical Cerclage unsureMy mood while writing this blog:
unsure

I have to make a decision about this by Friday and I need some advice..... My Dr and my specialist are in disagreement as to when to take out my cerclage. My Dr wants to wait and take it out the day of my c/s bc my cervix is so weak she doesn't think it will hold up once the cerclage is out. The specialist (Maternal Fetal Medicine) is worried that since I have started dilating the cerclage will come undone and tear my cervix, so they want to take it out before my c/s. I am only 1 cm and 60% effaced right now and have been for 2 weeks. I go back to the specialist on Friday and I know they will want to take it out after I get my ultrasound. I don't know what to do...take it out knowing my cervix is shot and risk going into labor, or keep it in and risk my cervix tearing if I continue to dilate???????? My c/s is scheduled in exactly 20 days from today. Thanks for any advice you can give...

well girl as you know ...I have a cervical cerclage myself....and the thought of it ripping me open is a daily nightmare of mine..your baby is already showing that its that time, although it is early...If I hear that I am even half a centi dialated Im going to demand that it be taken out!...lol...cause the baby will do well at around 35 weeks anyways and you might want more children ...so I guess we have to be careful of our cerix

Unfortunately I know this is not an easy decision. However you have to way the risk of both issues. One if you have it removed and you end up delivering early your little one will probably have to stay in the NICU for atleast a week maybe two. However if you are given steriods the lungs should be fine and baby will be ok. If you wait you risk ripping your cervix beyond repair and could loose the ability to carry again as well as risking the baby's health. I think given the two choices I would have it taken out. What ever you decide my prayers and thoughts are with your whole family.

I would take it out for sure because I would just trust the specialist more.

So here is my two cents... I say get it removed... Most hospitals can handle an emergency c-sec if you end up going into labor, however, no one can really repair a torn cervix. I am afraid, given what you have told me about your history, and from what I know about the weak cervix that you will continue to dilate and you will pop your stitch putting both you and your baby at risk. You are at a point in your pregnancy that it would be okay for LO to be born now. You got the shots for baby's lungs, so those should be in good shape, and you have made it past all the crucial developmental milestones. My only other thought...would your dr consider moving up the date of your c-sec so that you can maybe make a compromise??? If you could wait a week-ish on taking the stitch out would he consider doing the c-sec in ten days instead of 20???

I think that it sounds risker to keep it in as you could bleed from it tearing out. If you go into labor now your little one would be ok. I dont know to much about this but, i will send my thoughts and prayers. Also, an idea just poped in my head lol. What if you got another doctor to look at it and see what they say. I hope this helps and take care.
