09-4-2008 - name dilemma unsureMy mood while writing this blog:
unsure

Well, my partner and I would like to name our son Aryan. Aryan is an English word derived from the Sanskrit "Ārya" meaning "noble" or "honorable". Many religions (including Zoroastrians, Buddhists, Jains, and Hindus) use Aryan as a title for a person who is noble and/or spiritual. In Buddhist teachings for instance, someone can be Aryan, no matter what race they are, by being noble, good natured, righteous in behavior, etc... Likewise Aryan status is lost by not living up to this code of conduct.

We think this is really awesome and really love this name. However, we're already receiving alot of crap about it because of the way Hitler and the Nazis applied this word to the "Aryan race" and "Aryan brotherhood," referring to them as the master race.

I really don't want to give up this wonderful perfect name because of the misuse of it. The Christian faith still uses the cross even though the KKK burns it, am i right?

I'm sure this is a controversial subject, but I am not racist, and I love that name, and want my son to have it. I do not want my son to have to suffer for his name though, either.

Should I go ahead and name him Aryan, and if there are problems have him go by his middle name, or should we work on another name entirely? I don't think my partner is wanting to give up the name.

I would stick with the name you love. There are always people out there that are going to voice their opinion when its not wanted. Some people might be offended by naming a child Jesus, others appalled by naming a child Lucifer or Damien (from the Omen). I think you should stick with the name :) It didn't occur to me to associate the name with anything negative when I first read it...
