05-11-2008 - My Birth Story! EstaticMy mood while writing this blog:
Estatic

So, Friday October 17th was like any normal day. I was at home, taking care of my son, working on the nursery, cleaning up the house. I had horrible sciatic nerve issues the day before on Thursday which really put me in pain. But nothing horrible on Friday. My sugar levels were a bit high from me testing my gestational diabetes, so I took my son and went around the neighborhood on a walk to help lower my sugar levels. I was finally able to get to bed around 11pm that evening. I was awoken by my husband around 1:30am when he came home from work to go to bed. We sat there and talked and watched TV for a while. He fell asleep, while I was still tossing and turning. I was feeling some pains, but figured they were just my ligaments stretching from my enlarged uterus, which is what the doctor told me was happening to me before. At 2:30am, they were getting annoying and I went to the restroom. I felt a pop and thought I lost my mucus plug, but it wasn’t bloody so I didn’t think anything of it. I went back to bed, and then all of the sudden I had water gushing out. I woke up my husband and told him my water broke and I need to go to the hospital. I was only 35 weeks pregnant, so this is a total shock to me! Contractions started right away, which were 5-6 minutes apart. We grabbed our bags, woke up our son, and drove down to the hospital. When I got to the hospital, they put me in the triage area where they hooked me up to the non-stress test machine to check on my contractions and baby’s heart rate. They checked my dilation there, and I was already at 4cm. They moved me into my delivery/recovery room, where they offered me my epidural, which I happily accepted. After the epidural kicked in, I was able to relax a little more and able to rest. I moved to 5cm within one hour and stayed there for another hour. My nurse was calling my doctor to see if they wanted to add petocin to increase my labor, but I kept telling them to hold off until I had someone to pick up my son, who was still there in the room with us. I then quickly changed to 6cm. I got a hold of a church friend who said she was going to come immediately to get my son. My nurse was getting frustrated because the external monitor was losing the baby’s heart rate and they didn’t know if it was because the baby was moving down the birth control or if something else was wrong with him. They immediately put me on oxygen and were going to put the internal heart rate monitor on the baby’s head to get a better reading. When they checked to do that, they determined that in that half an hour I moved from 6cm to full 10cm and was ready to deliver. My friend came coincidently at that time to pick up my son to take him out of the room. My nurse ran out of the room to call my doctor to get to the hospital immediately and told me to lay on my left side and not to move. When she came back to put the internal monitor in, my baby’s head was already out (remember, I had my epidural, so I couldn’t have known!). She said, “Well, we can’t wait for your doctor to arrive, I’ll just deliver this baby myself!” I then heard the baby crying, which sent me into tears and laughter. It was truly amazing to see him so tiny and laying there. I was really worried if he was going to be okay since he was 5 weeks early from his due date. They took him to the nursery to check on him, and he passed his APGAR test with flying colors and was able to be returned back to me. Baby Elijah Johnny was born on 10/18/08 at 10:04am weighing 4lbs 8oz and was 17 ½ inches long. My doctor finally arrived 15 minutes after I delivered the baby. He checked me, laughed at the circumstances of my delivery, and checked on me and gave me 4 stitches. We stayed at the hospital for 2 days and we were both healthy enough to be released on Monday afternoon. It was definitely a memorial birth story!
