| 08-8-2008 - corey\'s birth story | My mood while writing this blog:just ducky :) |
Hi all,
Friday 7/18/08: at 10:26 Corey Matthew Young King is born. Labor progressed fast but easy. Got my epidural when I was 3 cm. 2 hrs later i was fully dilated and ready to push. When it came time for pushing, it started pretty typical but a short while later it was obvious fm his rapidly declining heartrate that he wasn't tolerating it well. I wound up having an emerg C section. As the dr put it: "Corey came out gray & floppy". After they vigorously rubbed him up and down, he started to breath on his own w/in a minute. He went to the Special Care unit at Beverly Hospital because of the challenges he had during delivery. Matt got to be with him and hold him while I was still knocked out. Matt could touch Corey's sides while Corey was in his little plastic "box". He was busy recovering and healing and growing and could not be picked up. The staff said Matt could go check on me and update me, but he wasn't going to leave the baby. Corey was getting a lot of attention and had contraptions attached to him.
Saturday 7/19: Corey went to Children's Hospital in Boston in the wee hrs bc he had 2 big seizures. He had a lot of work to do. The ambulance crew brought him to my room to say hi before going to Children's Hospital. I finally got to see him for the first time. Matt drove over to Children's Hospital soon after and held Corey. Later on, Matt saw him have a seizure & stop breathing. The staff at CH did great work and helped him get going again.
Sunday 7/20: Many family members came by to visit. We had a meeting with doctors and they told us the situation is really bad: babies in this situation most often don't make it. If they do make it, they usually end up in a vegetative state. We shed a lot of tears & started to consider having another baby.
Monday 7/21: Corey keeps breathing on his own. He no longer relies on back up help. More family continues to visit. At midnight, Corey drinks 5 ml of formula from a bottle. He can drink, swallow, and breathe...a big milestone for his condition.
Tuesday 7/22: I decided that I'll try to pump & feed Corey my own milk. He takes it. We met with the doctors and they said that because of the amount of his progress, and the rate of his progress, Corey is doing much better now. He got better much sooner and better than the doctors expected. Instead of overall problems everywhere, doctors point out a few specific trouble spots Corey may have while developing. Corey can already regulate his temperature, breathe and eat on his own. Corey is doing much better. He has a chance!
Wednesday 7/23 morning: Matt and I are headed to see Corey & I'm going to try to nurse him (now that they've told us we'll be bringing the baby home eventually).
7/24/08 Thursday
OH...today they told us that Corey can go home in the next couple of DAYS! He has to pass the car seat ride test. We visited him with my 2 older boys today. The boys loved to meet each other!
7/25/08 Friday
The Hospital called this a.m. and Corey can go home today!
