| 25-8-2009 - Taking Back the Dummy | My mood while writing this blog:Determined |
First of all, let me say that everything has turned out okay after my scan yesterday. Bubs is still a little on the small side, but measuring within a week of my dates, and all the vitals look good. No worries there. As the doc said, it was just one measurement, and he wanted to make sure there was nothing seriously wrong. But at least now I can breathe easier.
After that little catostrophe, I got number one son home and was trying to put him to bed when I realized I could not find a dummy (pacifier) anywhere. He had two left, and I was determined not to buy him anymore, because I wanted to get rid of the lot, and suddenly, nothing. He has had those things since he was three weeks old. I was having a bad day and just could not get him to stay asleep when I put him down, so hubby insisted I try one, and what do you know, miracle. Suddenly Lucas could sleep for hours! Typical. lol.
So I took him to the cot last night, after he'd waved and kissed everyone goodnight - made sure he was aware that he was going to bed, and put him down with a fluffy toy, a material nappy (his version of a comfy blanket) and his pillow. I closed the door halfway so that he still had some light and noise from the kitchen, and just walked away. I thought I was going to get crying and screaming from down the hallway, but nothing. Not a whisper. He was out like a light in five minutes flat. I did not expect it to be that easy.
Today, not so easy. I don't know if it's because daytime naps are a little more flexible than his evening bedtime, of if he was suddenly aware that he hadn't had his dummy last night, but he put up a fight. I could not settle him down. I won't leave him cry for more than five minutes, and he has to be settled right back down before I leave him again. But he has a certain cry, which kind of makes him sound like he's in pain or something, and anyway, I just know that he won't give in when he uses it. So I went into his room, settled him down, then put him back down with his teddy bear, and just sat next to his cot where he could see me. I was exhausted myself, so my eyes started to close. When I got a sore neck after five minutes, I opened my eyes slightly to check on him, and what do you know, sound asleep. No thumb in mouth, no (usual) mumbling and groaning, just eyes closed and perfectly asleep.
For months I have been dreading taking back the dummy, and now it's done, I'm so relieved. I thought he'd have it till school! lol.
