03-9-2009 - Medical/Pregnancy Dilemna. Input please? worried/confused/torn/scaredMy mood while writing this blog:
worried/confused/torn/scared

My new dilemna has my mind racing... I am on a medicine, its called Medrol, its Methylprednisolone, a corticosteroid, which is a level C medicine, so there are either studies in animals that cause harm to the fetus or no studies at all... its trying to trick my body into making platelets and stop destroying them.. and at this point, we had to take a very minimal chance at causing a complication with the baby to try to cure a HUGE complication with me... if my platelets don't come up I may need a blood transfusion after a c-section that I would have to go under full anesthesia for... I wouldn't be allowed a vaginal birth without epidural because I lack the platelets to clot or with epidural because I would most certainly develop an epidural hematoma in my spine, where you bleed into your spine and I would require surgical decompression which when your platelets are too low it causes complications for any surgery... so it'd be kind of a catch 22.. have surgery to have the baby or have the baby naturally and have surgery to fix things... BUT all of this could be avoided IF this darn medicine works.. this medicine leaves a taste of vomit in my mouth constantly, I only have to take it for 6 days, I'm on day 2... I'm just afraid to get to the end and it have not worked... then my options are a lot more invasive... part of me doesn't want to know if this is going to work, how silly is that!? ergh.. I'd love some input from you ladies... am I insane? what would you do?

One of those things where the benefits outweigh the risks. When I was in hospital pregnant with Sebastian, I had to go on several class C drugs (short courses thankfully, like you) but it had to be done. Sebastian turned out just fine, as I am sure your baby will as well. Fingers crossed that you find out at the end of the month the treatment worked!

I too had to take some level C medications while pregnant with Sean. It was scary, but at the same time, if you don't where could that put you!!

well i think you are doing the best thing for you and your family by taking the meds, and i think you should just keep thinking positively and ill bet you and your baby girl will be just fine, your a strong woman and im gonna bet your daughter is a strong little lady as well, and i think you two will be ok. im very sorry you have to go through this, and i will keep you and your baby girl in my thoughts.

I have to agree with Rochelle on this one...you also have another child who depends on you and needs a mommy! I know there are risks, but sometimes the benefit outweighs the risk...ultimately it is up to you though...

That is a tough situation. Did you bring it up to your doctor about the medication? What did s/he say? If s/he believes it to be okay then I would stick with it even though I agree autumn that the class c would scare me half to death as well. Good luck and I hope everything works out for the best!!!

So sorry to hear that you are going through this... :( Just taking medication while being pregnant is risky enough, let alone having to worry that it won't work and you will have more additional problems. Did you have this same problem with Maddox? If it was me (and this is going off just what you wrote, I am obv. not in your situation and I am unaware of what the more invasive measures are) I wouldn't take the medication... mainly because the class "c" part would scare me right to death. God Forbid anything goes wrong or happens to the baby... and the unknown has always scared me right to death!! I only took tylenol a select few times in my pregnancies for that matter!! I'd opt for the C-Section with the transfusion and then the risk to the baby is minimal... I just can't imagine waiting until she is here to know whether or not the medication hurt her, with no guarantee that the medication would work. Make the desicion that you feel is right in your heart... Hope things get better really soon for you! *hugs*
