My mood while writing this blog: Ok |
As accurately noted by a few friends, I haven't been online in ages. I've been neglecting my macbook in favour of my very demanding baby. I suppose that's to be expected sometimes.
Thanks to all who offered prayers and concerns about Zemirah's surgery. I wish I had time to respond individually to everyone, but clearly I have little typing time lately. Please know that your warm wishes meant a lot to me. Her surgery went smoothly. Her right overy and part of her fallopian tube were sticking through a hole in her groin area, and the surgeon was able to put them back in place and close up the hole. There were no complications, and we had her home by early afternoon. She spent the rest of the next few days sleeping, eating, and recovering. She had infant tylenol every 6 hours and that seemed to relieve any pain she was feeling. The surgery site is still covered with tape, so I can't tell yet if she's going to have a little scar or not. Either way, the problem has been resolved, and I don't think that the surgery site is giving her any more pain.
The unfortunate thing that happened after recovering from the surgery is that Zemirah became just as 'fussy' (that word has been bothering me) as she was before. People seem to apply the word 'fussy' any time a baby cries, without taking into account what the reason for the crying might be (I got mad when a nurse referred to her as fussy after the surgery - she was hungry and in pain, not fussy). It seems as though she has been in legitimate pain, not just crying for the sake of crying, as fussy would imply to me. She went back to being sleepless, screaming while trying to eat, tensing up her body when having any intestinal issue, and being a generally unhappy baby. We had hoped that the hernia was the cause of her upset, but after the hernia was fixed, it became clear that it was other digestive issues, not something that the surgery would fix. We now have her taking a probiotic that her pediatrician recommended, and it seems to be making a difference so far. She's been taking it for three days, and she's been screaming a lot less, eating and sleeping much better, no longer tensing up her entire body when she's gassy or having digestive issues, and she's actually been happy and smily finally.
Now that we have a happy healthy baby, I actually had a few minutes to hop back on the computer again. I've been so busy with all her screaming and sleeplessness that I haven't had time to do anything else in my life. This weekend I finally got a little sleep, I got to shower, and Tony, Zemirah and I even went out to the store. It's amazing how such little things have become so exciting! Most of all, we're so glad that the surgery is past, the probiotic is helping her belly, and Zemirah is finally able to smile, laugh, bat at toys and kitties, and enjoy herself.
