My mood while writing this blog: anxious |
On Monday night, DH and I went on a tour of the hospital. I nearly had a panic attack in the L&D room....its just so intimidating. There was blood stains on the floor, the lights were so bright, it smelled strongly of "hospital" and the bed with the stirrups was just leering at me. I started to pace, chew my nails and mutter "this is scary, this is scary, this is scary..." to my DH, who was just staring at me wide eyed. They also take your baby away after she is born to assess and weigh - tell me, WHY can't they do that in the room with you? I don't like that at all, they won't do it with the mom there! I am so upset.
I am freaking out - I wish I could do a home birth or wish I had a birth center. I don't think I can handle that L&D room or that place. It was just horrible.
Help!

Wednesday, 5 Aug I wonder what you would have done if you saw an NHS hospital! Honestly, though, when you are admitted...INSIST that the baby not leave your side. Really. Insist. They will do it. orone -
Friday, 31 Jul wow, I would definitely see if you can deliver somewhere else. Yes I agree, once you are in labor, you do tend to forget about your surroundings, but only when the action is going on. I was in a labor room for 16 hours before i had my son, and thankfully it was a large very peaceful room with lots of ammenities to help labor and stress, the tough labor was only an hour, so the other 15 hours I had ample time to settle into my room. My son was a risky birth, and even with that, the NICU staff was in our room when I delivered, so the furthest he was away from me was about 10 feet across the room where i could see everything. When they moved us about 2 hours later to our recovery room, my husband pushed the cart with our son, and my dad pushed me in the wheelchair, so he never left our site from birth to discharge. As for the bed with stirrups...that is so not necessary, and completely pointless if you have an epidural. I was numb from the waist down so my husband and a nurse held both of my legs while I pushed. Again, I would ask around to see if you have other options that is covered with your insurance. Good luck! lauraplusone -
Friday, 31 Jul that doesnt sound very pleasant, but truthfully - when you are in labor you wont be paying attention to much about the room or the bed or the smell :) youll have more important things to focus on! xxx ♥PrincessR♥ -
Thursday, 30 Jul Oh bless hun - that sounds AWFUL! I dont blame you for getting freaked out, I think I would too.
Im just freaking out about birth in general, my pain threshold is just so low - it scares the life out of me!

Thursday, 30 Jul that doesn't sound right one little bit. your a veternerian, you wouldn't take someone on a tour to your surgery room in that state would you?! i'd definately look elsewhere. there is also absolutely no reason for them to take bubs away from you for anything unless an emergency arrises. she should be in the same room as you unless you request otherwise. and a stirrup bed, my god those are used unless absolutely necesary, they're not suggesting you will be one of those are they? that's incredibly old fashioned. all sounds very suss..... bakingaboy -

Thursday, 30 Jul That does sound very scary.....thank god my L& B is not like that, its like a nice homey ,,cozy feeling where you can adjust the lights and they NEVER take the baby away...the baby is there the minute she is born until you get out of the hospital...where do you live???? cbanks -
Thursday, 30 Jul I agree that sounds scary. My hospital isn't like that at all. the labor and delivery rooms here are very comfortable and relaxing. i guess that's why i chose the hospital 45 minutes from home. They weighed my son and all that in the room then took him for 4 hours to regulate his temp and stuff. mamalvs4 -
Thursday, 30 Jul if you dont like it i would find somewhere else that you are comfortable with. my hospital does everything in the room, which is nice and there definitly is no BLOOD stains, yuck. a lot of hospitals and stuff are going toward a more homey feel. i say shop around a little till your comfortable 1st baby on the way-411 -
Thursday, 30 Jul Yikes is right-I wish I would have asked what they do with my baby right after delivery...Now I'm curious. Well maybe you can write down a few questions along with some concerns for you to discuss with your Dr. I'm sure he or she could put your mind at ease...blood stains on the floor is kind of scary but if it's a older hospital I guess that's explainable at least. I wish you luck! :o) Isa1227 -
Thursday, 30 Jul LOL, you’re definitely acting pregnant, it’s not as bad as it sounds, I had my twins in Somerville, and they’re really good, I don’t know what hospital you’re planning on going to, but it wasn’t as bad, plus my Husband went with the nurses and he even help them clean the babies, he was happy he got the opportunity of bond with them right there, to be quite honest I was soo tired and out of it, that I didn’t even realize they left me alone LOL I just wanted to sleep, and they even took the babies all night so we could have some rest (that’s def up to you), just don’t worry you have the strength to go through 9 months of pregnancy, you’re gonna be able to handle everything in L&D room, that’s the easy part :O) AVERY WILL BE FINE :O) RainbowRach -
Thursday, 30 Jul OMG, I am so sorry you had such a bad experience. I cannot believe there was blood stains on the floor! Did the person who gave you the tour talk to you about making the room more comfortable? by turning down the lights, rearranging the room. Having any equipment you dont want in there removed? Have some aroma oils in the room, maybe the comfort of your own pillow/cushion? There are lots of things you can do to make the room a better place x try not to worry too much, I am sure your mind will be on the birth of your precious baby, not the room x x
If they must assess the baby outside of the room (be sure to ask them to do it in the same room) then insist your DH goes with them and the baby. 2ndlibrababy -
Thursday, 30 Jul When your in labor you don't even notice anything other than what your body is doing. It will be hard to put your tour out of your mind but I would try. I hate hospitals all together so I would never do a tour and as far blood stains, I always hemorrage and my floor after my daughter was covered along with the feet of all who were in my room that morning. But I'm okay and you will be to. If your like most moms you will be so tired and hungry after you delivery that you won't mind the 10 minutes your lil angel is gone being weighed and measured. I like my lil ones to stay in the nursery as much as possible when I'm in the hospital so I can rest before i bring her home..I know alotta moms like that. I'm sorry it was so scary, but I promise that it looked worse than it actually is. dayshasmom -
Thursday, 30 Jul O wow, that does sound scary. Do you have an option of using another hospital?? Most hospitals have LDR rooms (Labor, Delivery, & Recovery) and do everything in the room with you. The beds are usually a normal hospital bed that breaks down. What you described would freak me out too. I would ask if I could use another hospital, if I cant I would try to take another tour to get a little more familiar with the facility. Maybe that will help, but to a point its going to be normal to have fears. Im facing a c-section this time and Im terrified! I think if we had to we could give birth in the middle of a restaurant if we needed to. lol Im not sure Im being any help, but I hope it helped in some way. jamie79 -
Thursday, 30 Jul I think the thought & smells of everything is worse than when you actually have to go in & have your baby because the excitement & anticipation of your baby arriving take over. If that makes sense! lol Its not as bad as it seems. I had a csection & had to walk into the o.r. & that is scary, but I just try to relax b/c it will be over soon.
