| 09-7-2008 - Birth Story | My mood while writing this blog:Ok |
Monday, June 30th I had a Pre Natal appt. Since I had been passing mucous over the weekend my Doctor performed an exam. After the exam I was bleeding a bit and getting some very slight period type cramps but didn't think anything about it as a bit of bleeding is normal after the exam. I continued on my day with running errands and picking up the last bits and pieces I needed before Cole arrived and thank god I did that!! The bleeding subsided by the evening mostly until 8:30pm when I passed my mucous plug (looked like a big clot). I thought nothing really of it as the bleeding had stopped and I was convinced at this point I was going to be pregnant forever!!
After puttering about for the evening I went to bed around 2am but of course didn't really sleep.....I was getting period cramps that were very mild that would come and go but had no real pattern to them. At 4am I went pee and well finished peeing however I felt Cole "swimming" around in my pelvis and more liquid came out in a trickle. Hrm yes this is weird....I sat and waiting a bit and it happened again. Still completely in denial I thought I would call the hospital and let them know my symptoms. The nurse advised that I should come in and get checked in case it was my water that broke. I was totally prepared to go to the hospital and be sent home feeling like an idiot that it was just pee.
On arrival at the hospital (it was about 5am at this point) I was hooked up to some monitors and was still having the slight cramping that came and went in no routine. After monitoring for awhile the nurse checked to see if my water broke with the litmus (spl?) paper and happily annnounced it HAD. She then performed and exam and I was 3 cm dilated!! WTF???? Okay so now I went from being Miss Cool and Collected to Miss Hyper Ventilating i'm not ready yet!!!!
I was moved to my birthing room (probably around 6:30am at this point) and my birthing nurse Kathy came in and introduced herself.....We went through the usual questions and I was advised to just try and get a little rest that we were in for awhile and I was going to need my strength. Our goal was to get this baby out of me by 5pm. Since it was a holiday (Canada Day) there was only 1 anetheologist in who was in an emergency surgery at the time. I was going to have to wait for my epidural. At this point I was completely fine with that. This labour stuff was easy and didn't even hurt that much. However...this was only early labour....I was in for a shocking surprise!!
7:30am rolls around and the Doctor comes in to break the rest of my waters. Our plan is to get this labour moving!! WOW these cramps can now be called contractions!! When can I get that epidural??? 8:30am?? Okay I can do that...how much worse can this get before then? I'm only 3-4 cms still.........8:00am....okay where is that anatheologist?!?!? Kathy gets me all set up for the epidural sitting on my bed with my back exposed......okay can we say OWWWWWW!!!!!!!????????? 8:30am comes and goes......Emergency surgury is taking longer........9:00am...I'm convinced i'm dying!! At this point my contractions are super intense and coming right on top of each other....I can't do this anymore!!! 9:30am the Anesiologist comes and intoduces herself to me....all I can think is who cares what your name is DRUGS WOMAN!!! It took 5 tries to get the epidural in and one quick top up.......
Finally I can lay back down....so they can check me out.....SURPRISE!! I'm already 8-9 CM dilated and it's time to push!! 10:00am and the pushing begins.....It really is hard to figure out the right way to get him out and the effective way to push...however at this point i'm feeling no pain and just a bunch of pressure......10:41am July 1st, 2008 Cole John Richards was born at 5lbs 14oz and 19 inches long - Completely Healthy............Erasing all the pain and making EVERYTHING worth it!!!
