23-9-2009 - Using a doppler so reassuringMy mood while writing this blog:
so reassuring

Over the weekend my best friend lent me her AngelSounds Doppler so I could try hear my little ones heartbeat. I have to admit when Igot home I was really nervous about trying it, what if I wasnt going to hear anything? So I tried it and sure enough I couldnt find a heartbeat. I was crushed. I came on this site and saw that a few other ladies had been able to pick up the heartbeat even earlier than I was, I was 10 weeks 7 days. So I looked it up on the net and the average time to pick it up was 12 weeks, or depending on the way the baby was. I felt a little better, then I read that its best used with gel and I also noticed that people were using aloe vera gel, so I found a substitute and I finally picked up a little heartbeat, I was overjoyed:) Im just sooooooo happy that I can listen and get the reassurance I need from time to time to make me feel that its all real because its still hard for me to believe theres actually a baby growing inside my belly! I let my partner listen and he thought it was amazing, but worries that its harmful to baby, would it be???? My daughter Kiara loves listening too, her eyes light up once we pick up the heartbeat and she even talks to my belly:) Shes going to be the perfect big sister!

We never really know the effects of ANYTHING until much later. To think we used to have 20 week XRAYS! Now we wouldn't DREAM of having an xray while pregnant. I say...the doctors do it allllll the time. Enjoy it! I probably use mine about once a week on average. Hope it doesn't turn out to be harmful. I've had so many ultrasounds and doppler use it's not even funny.

Awww congrats! I wanted to rent one of those expensive ones this time around but decided I needed the moneys for other stuff. So I just bought an ol' fashion cheap stethoscope. I have only heard it once with it, but everytime I go to the doc I feel alittle better.

I've been advised to use it once every other day, because the baby occasionally shifts into awkward positions in which you won't pick up a heartbeat (even now, at 27-weeks). This isn't because it's dangerous, it's because hospitals are inundated with panicky pregnant women who assume the worst because the baby is in an awkward position! :-D Another draw-back is that you occassionally pick up your own (or the umbilical cord) and assume the baby's heartbeat is slower then it ought to be (for some reason, I always forget my heartbeat is faster then it ought to be, and assume it's the baby's heartbeat, but too slow).... Also, even midwives struggle to find a heartbeat before 15-weeks (and even struggle then, sometimes!). I have an Angelsounds, and always said I'd NEVER be "THAT panicky pregnant woman", but I am! :-P Glad you found the heartbeat! :-D

Not harmful to use the doppler - it's just receiving sound waves. Now I would not have it on all day long, but to check every now and then is just fine. Glad you found bubs, but don't panic if you can't find it every day - if you are in the wrong position, it will be hard to detect sometimes! Take care :)
