17-2-2010 - Gestational Diabetes

My mood while writing this blog:
Bummed out:(

A week ago I was told by my midwife that I have gestational diabetes, im so unbelivably bummed out about this:(
I had to have a nurse come visit me at home to talk about this and give me a little kit containing a finger pricker and blood sugar reader which I have to do 6 times a day. So for almost 5 days I had to do these little tests and then go into the hospital diabetes clinic and talk to a Dr, a dietitian and some other lady who will be monitoring me and baby for the rest of my pregnancy. The Dr looked at my book of readings and was not satisfied that I was controlling my sugar levels so has now put me on pills that will help get my levels down and the dietitian has written me a strict diet to stick to and I will be seen by them again in 2 weeks time. I will also be having another scan, which is a plus I guess, its to make sure baby isnt getting too big. At the moment she is measuring right on average size so im happy with that.
Im really not happy with all of this though and it gets me really down, it seems as though its one bad thing after another and just as I started to really become excited and connected with this pregnancy, well now im not so sure:(
I was also told that when I was last checked out at the hospital for what I thought was leaking fluid but turned out to be a UTI, the results also came back as me having Strep B present which means that I will need to have antiobiotics during labour to make sure nothing passes through to baby. My midwife didnt even tell me this when I saw her last week! Can anything else go wrong? Times like this I would have some chocolate to cheer me up and im not even allowed:(

Awww Im so sorry hun! That really stinks. Hopefully the pills will help and control everything. You know this means you'll have an easy labor and delivery right? I had the world's easiest pregnancy and one HELL of a labor....decent delivery though ;)

Oh hun - you are doing so well! And there really isnt long to go now. Like I said, if you can do this, you can do anything, lol! I will make you lots of mars bar cake to make up for it once Kaleah graces us with her presence :)I cant wait to meet my daughters best friend!!xx

I had GD and it was nothing to be honest. I monitored my blood 5 times a day, altered my diet to remove all carbs (no white bread, white rice, pasta or potatoes), limited my sugar intake and walked ALOT. I had it under control thankfully. And in the end, my daughter was healthy although we did get induced 1 week early when I was 39 weeks along. Inducing was nothing either - 4 1/2 hours of labour - done. I would remove all carbs - they are the WORST culprits. And it should help dramatically!! Good luck! xox

It's good they "caught" the Group B Strep hun. Once you are in labor you won't even notice the antibiotics going in. This happened to me as well. As for the GD, I am sorry. You don't have much longer to go now until baby is born and they will keep a close eye on you to make sure you and baby are healthy. x

Don't beat yourself up, you are doing a great job growing a healthy baby, you are working AND being a mum and partner. (just on the quiet I think they make a really big deal about GD, all these tests they do these days, you know when we were born there was nothing like it) Strep B is just one of those things, you got it or you don't, better to know so you don't pass it to baby but at the same time if it wasn't for having a baby you would never have found out!! Not long to go now, if it helps I've gained an enormous amount of weight in the last month and a half and have had to buy bigger everything, I don't even recognise myself, its out of control just like what is happening to you. xxx

oh god sorry to hear your going through all of this - it sounds terrible -i hope your levels are ok at your next check up and that this new diets gets easier for you - its really not right being pg and not being allowed to have choccie
