My mood while writing this blog: Shocked |
I had to add this blog as I had this talk with my Dr. yesterday. She has been trying to get me to do an amnio especially after finding out about the Club Foot and I asked her what are the risks? She tells me well, unfortunately 1 out of every 200 women will have their water broken and result in a miscarriage. She said back in the day it was an even higher risk. 1 out every 100 women will miscarry as a result of an amnio. She said it's often important enough to the individual to know as they may decide to terminate the pregnancy. OMG, at 5 months? Who could do this? I told her the only reason I want to know in advance and by no means am I willing to take the risk of losing my darling baby is so that I can prepare for a special needs child if necessary. All that talk about miscarriages and amnios and specail needs got me humble and grateful that I am 21 weeks yesterday and things are going really well with my little boy Jack. I thought this might be good information for those of you who are being pressured by your doctors to schedule an amnio. Do some research on it. Weigh out the pros and cons and always check your motives in your decision. This could be a life changing procedure!

Monday, 26 Oct I am only 17weeks 5 days, however I am also of "advanced maternal age". My doctor is very supportive of declining testing. I haven't had my second ultrasound yet but know that this baby has a purpose and don't think I would have an amnio either. On the issue of the club foot, I was born with one in 1970. I didn't require surgery but wore corrective shoes with braces which started at a very young age. I'm sure it was harder on my mother than it was on me as I have no memory of it what-so-ever. I was in gymnastics, danced (tap, jazz, ballet and even went on to be on "toes" in ballet). I played sports and danced my entire young life through high school. You would never know that I was born with a so called birth defect. In fact, until I started having children I didn't even know it was considered one. I just wanted to give you the perspective of someone born with a club foot and hope that it can ease your mind. Best wishes and lots of love sent your way. Happy pregnancy, love reading your blogs. azsmika -
Friday, 23 Oct You know it is a scary procedure. I had one done recently. I was scared but I think every woman has to weigh the risks and the benefits. I personally dread the idea of a retarded child. I know it is not nice to say it but I know how much it would break my heart every single day. I totally understand women who opt out as I was scared to death to do it also. I just read a lot about both, genetic defects and risks. I found other numbers in which they explained that many women who had their miscarriages after amnio would have lost their babies due to a genetic disease and they were not factored in in many studies. I know...I thought of it both ways. I also have seen a 23 yr old mother carry to term a baby after they warned her at her 2nd level u/s that the heart looked abnormal. The baby was still born. My other friend who is only 30 had an XXY baby until they discovered that he also had a heart defect. This can happen to anyone. It is all about do how much can we take and which way. Losing a baby during pregnancy is not easy. I have lost one already. Everytime I hear or see my baby's heartbeat I cry of joy. I am glad the amnio is over and my baby is healthy. I wish for all of you ladies to have a peace of mind and a healthy beautiful child. LGK616 -
Friday, 23 Oct I refused all invasive tests during my pregnancy that I was offered because I was 38. I honestly believe that the "over 35" thing is all a crock. My daughter's pediatrician has about 40 of us over 35 moms - not one of us has a child with special needs. The other 100+ moms she has are under 35 and she said roughly 25 have a special needs child - 15 of those mom's are under the age of 25!!! Sorry to get off-track in a way - I mean to say...do what you feel is right for you and your child. You will know what's right. xox Julianna -
Friday, 23 Oct Unexpected23...I'm not sure what you mean by your comment. Anyone can have the AFP test and it comes back with false abnormal results. THere are SO many factors that can make it false and then people will go on to have an amnio and find out that all is just fine only to later lose their child because of the amnio. It happens so much more than doctors want us to know. The risks involved with an amnio are not age discriminate. They apply to all pregnancies unexpected23 -
Friday, 23 Oct I think that is a little prejudice because as a young mom myself I have a better mentally then most 40 year olds. That's just my opinion. roosa -
Friday, 23 Oct I refuse amnios for that same reason. I never want to knowingly put my baby at risk. When my doctor asked and we reclined, he said 'good'. It was nice to not have a pushy doctor but rather supporting. In my last pregnancy they kept pushing for an amnio and we had to keep declining. It was frustrating. MamaLuvnJah -
Friday, 23 Oct My doc said she forgot to ask me if I wanted the amnio and her nurse called me at home to ask me. Weird!! Cause I could swear she asked me already. I totally agree w/ you Nina. angelblessings -
Friday, 23 Oct wow..didnt know that about it. thanks for the info. expecting mothers should be more aware of these things. good thing you asked. :) lil.pigz -
Friday, 23 Oct My DR pressured me to do the quad screen tests, which usually result in amnio because of their high false results. I gave in with this baby and did the blood test, but swore up and down I would NOT do an amnio no matter the results. Same as you, I don't feel it is worth risking the babies life over it. Not when the amnio usually yields results that nothing was wrong to begin with. Lots of sad stories on the internet about it. Definiteley worth looking into for those facing the decision, and weighing the pro's and cons:-) Julianna -
Friday, 23 Oct My doc offered the Amnio and when I refused it, he did an ultrasound to see if there was any reason to do the amnio. He said everything appeared normal & that he undtestood I didn't want to risk it. It is nice when Doctors aren't too push about it. Some people get scared into having one when they really don't want to. The stats are a bit staggering.
