| 01-10-2009 - I\'ve got mastitis :( HELP! |
My mood while writing this blog: Owwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww |
OMG!!! my right BB is on FIRE!!
I have mastitis. When I woke this morning my right BB was REALLY hard. So I chose that one to start Emilys feeds for the day. After she had finished, there was still a huge lump in there. I massaged my breast and stuck the pump on, some milk came out but it didnt shift the lump. So I put a warm flannel on there and massaged again.
I put Emily back on when she was hungry and she did a great job of getting most of the blockage to go. Its still sore and has a red patch that feels hot to touch. I have been told by my health visitor that a cabbage leaf in my bra will help (!) anyone used this? does it work? Does anyone have any other advice please (apart from go to the doctor if it gets worse)?
Thank you!!!! Rach x x x

Thursday, 1 Oct You're on the right track with the feeds & massaging - Try a pressure massage instead of a circular massage - Start at the edge of the lumpy area closest to your chest wall. Apply pressure as hard as you can, until it becomes too painful. Hold pressure until the pain eases - then increase the pressure again. Gradually increase pressure until you are pressing as hard as you can. Then pick up your hand, move a cm or 2 toward your nipple & repeat until you get all the way to your nipple. (reference = Dr. Sears - The Breastfeeding Book)This has worked for me twice within hours of noticing the blockage - extremely painful, but worth it. trinity -
Thursday, 1 Oct Don't use cabbage leaf it will dry your milk supply! Use ice! There is swelling and heat increases the inflammation! Ice 15 to 20mins several times a day. I put it on as much as I could. And nursed often like you on that side and it helped. ice is one of those things that is awesome for sore breast but no one tells you about it. Hope you feel better. kaysfamily -

Thursday, 1 Oct Just keep nursing on that side, put a warm moist compress or warm shower on the hot spot and take ibuprofen. I tried cold cabbage leaves and it worked but that was more for engorgement. littlemissfatty!! -
Thursday, 1 Oct ah poor u, my sister had mastitis and was in agony, but she ended up on antibiotics, the only way to get rid is to feed thro it, and yes the cabbage leaf works, fresh from the fridge so its nice and cold :-D hope u feel better soon x x Diegirl -
Thursday, 1 Oct I have used cabbage leaves, but it helps dry up your milk supply. I used it to help with the engorgement when i stopped bfing? Are you finished BFing? If not I wouldn't be using cabbage leaves too much. Warms showers and massages is what I did when I got mastitis. I did have to go one antibiotics because I got the infection. If you develop a fever or feel like you have the flu you most likely will need to see a doc. minkymoo78 -
Thursday, 1 Oct I know how you feel, my left boob is just full of red hot lumps and rock solid, it just leaks all day and isn't going down very quickly since I stop breastfeeding. I have heard from loads of people that a cabbage leaf works but I haven't tried it. I just take lots of paracetomol and am hoping it goes away soon. I look so odd with one massive boob and one normal one! So painful to sleep on as well x luckywhite -
Thursday, 1 Oct just keep massaging that lump out at each feed even try the rugby baby hold to encourage a different 'drain' on the boob.take paracetamol, alternate hot and cold flannels and also a warm bath and massage your boobies.. if its not better by tomoro or you start to feel really poorly and fluey.. you may need antibiotics but try all the above first cause the anti's can really upset Emily-roses tummy.
