| 28-4-2009 - Febrile Seizures | My mood while writing this blog:Ok |
Hi there this is just a topic I feel really serious about. For those of you who may not know or have never experienced this I would just like to say a little about febrile seizures.
Febrile seizures are convulsions bought on by a fever mainly in between children upto the age of 6.
3 months ago my brother in law's wife brother had passed away and that afternoon the hubby and I had decided to go to pay our respects. So by afternoon we were packed and on our way to Abu Dhabi almost a 2 hr drive away. On the way our daughter Sameera was fine, happy and playful in the car. She had even taken a nap. After waking up she took some juice and a sandwich. Things were fine at least we thought they were.
We were half hour away from my bro in laws house when Sami just stopped talking. The hubby and I called out to her but she was unresponsive. Stopping the car we took her out, she showed no signs of a fever. Getting back in the car a while later she became unresponsive and started shaking. Her body froze and she was shaking her arms and legs flapping wildly.
I moved her into a sitting postion and she vomitted through her mouth and nose. Going crazy by now my hubby and I were going frantic as we had no idea where the nearest hospital was or how far we were from it. By now Sami was frothing at the mouth and her unable to take breath. It was the most scariest thing we were ever experiencing.
My hubby called his bro in law who gave him directions and it took a ten mins to get to the hospital all the while Sami was seizing and her eyes had rolled back into her head. I was crying and praying thinking please god dont let me lose my baby not now.
We got to the hospital and she was taken into emergency where they put a tube down her throat to clear up any mucus. The docs regulated her breathing and placed an oxygen mask over her face to help her breathe. The docs were suprised that she had been seizing for almost 30 mins as this type of seizure only lasts for a couple of mins.
They decided to transfer us to the a child specialist hospital and placed her in the ambulance along with me and my hubby we were transferred. Upon arrival at the hospital they stripped Sami off all her clothing leaving her in just her diaper and set about to work on her giving her oxygen and testing her ECG levels.
Our baby had to have a tube inserted through her nose and 3 tubes inserted into her neck. It was devastating seeing her like that. She had to go and have a CT Scan and all kinds of tests as the amount of time she was seizing the doctors were worried that it could have had an effect on her brain.
Our baby had to spend 2 nights in ICU and 2 nights on the ward. Luckily all her tests results came back negative. It was the most scariest experience me and the hubby had gone through we though we had actually lost her. The doctors said that her fever was not present and instead went directly to her brain casuing her seizure and it was a miracle we had gotten to the hospital if we were 10 mins late then there would have been lasting damage.
Now she has to go back for check ups every two months and they say that as she gets older the chances of her having a reaccurance will become less. After a child reaches 6 years then they ususally stop. We have to carry emergency medicine with us all the time now if we go out somewhere as you can never be too sure.
There is a chance that our new baby could have the same problem which is worrying but hopefully we can get through this and not a day goes by when i thank God for letting Sami live.
I urge any of you moms- or mom to be's out there that you can never be too careful and to keep a close eye on your baby's fever.
