21-3-2009 - Planning ahead OkMy mood while writing this blog:
Ok

So girls, I know I am kinda "jumping the gun" here a bit, as I am only 22 wk spreg, but what do u pack in a hospital suitcase? also do u have to take stuff in for the baby as well? or do they give u stuff in the hospital to use? Don't forget I live in Canada, so girls who live in Canada might know what they get to use in the hospital. Pls help with the suitcase and baby list and i know nothing about this, also how long after induce and c-section can u take a shower? Als when u are in labour for a whole day, do they give u somthing to eat or can u buy something...omg I know nothing here...I am frealking out. ...!! Can u ladies believe that I don't know to comb and tie pigtails? and I am having a GIRL. I can't even hold a baby for more than 2mins, cause then i just don't know what else to do and I end up passing the baby back to the mom. I think I am hopeless girls. :)...pls help

From my experience, I would suggest taking whatever you are most comfortable in and don't mind if it gets blood stains (not to scare you, but even if you have a c-section, you bleed ALOT during the first few days!) At the hospital I was at, they supplied these diaper like pads, but I still managed to leak through.

As for your baby, I would take a couple of outfits in a couple of sizes (some NB clothes are bigger than others) My daughter was 7 lbs but most of the NB clothes didn't fit, luckily we took a sleep gown that didn't swallow her. Also, I would take a couple of receiving blankets (the ones at our hospital were a little scratchy).

The most important thing to remember, is that no matter what you forget, someone can either run to your house to get it or go buy you a new one!!!

1st off CALM DOWN!!! cross those bridges when you get to them. From my experience ( i had a c-section) after your in labor you wont get food, You wont be hungry either. you will be able to take a shower about 2 days after the delivery but th enurses came in twice a day and gave me a bath (how wonderful!!) you will have a catheter (urinary) so you wont have to get up to pee until they take it out. as for you hospital bag, Pack several gowns for urself that are good for breast feeding. several underwear and sanitary pads. Breast pads too. and a Comfy going home outfit (or wear your pajamas like i did) and if you want to bring clothes for you baby you can (i did) and start getting used to dressing you baby sooner. but she will def need a going home outfit. but the hospital provides basic baby clothing. but I would def pack a few baby gowns and onesies just in case, I hope this helps!!

Savvy~ You might want to contact the hospital you are to deliver in and find out what you need for baby. I know in BC that they do supply diapers, but now I live in Alberta and you are to bring your own everything from diapers, to pads for your flow afterwards. They only supply two diapers here and then you are to use your own. It wasn't always this way. Here in Alberta(Calgary more specifically) they have a book for parents called From Here to Maternity. In it there is a list of everything that the hospitals recommend bringing with you for you and baby.

Depends how long your going on what to take. But i recomend disposable pants because the bleeding is quite bad and take large pads.

that was supposed to say Brush lol....and my friend was plus sized and I don't know if you are or not but you can ask them for the larger hospital gowns here and they'll get them for you:-) Now relax and think happy thoughts. My baby kicks the heck out of me when I stress lol

Hey you:-) I'm in BC Canada and I know the hospital system is a little different all the way across the country but my friend had a baby via c-section in January so here's what I learned from visiting her. She could shower the day after the surgery.....they supply diapers and these paper towel like wipes...they also provide plain white sleepers. They provide food if you're allowed to eat, if you're having a c-section they won't let you eat a thing. Pack your slippers a house coat and your comfiest maternity clothes because you'll be going home in them. Hope this helps....oh and don't forget a tooth bruch:-P

Other people's babies are so different than your own. I didn't have much interest in other people's kids, but it was so different when my son was born. The first six weeks were pretty scary because we were just getting to know each other, but you will fall into a routine pretty quickly & learn (what doesn't come naturally) everything pretty quick. Dont worry!!!

I am from Minnesota, so I'm not quite sure how the hospitals in CA work in comparison, but here they don't let you eat until the baby is born, so make sure you fill up as much as possible before going in. The things I brought to the hospital and actually used were:

Snacks - beef jerky, crackers, rice krispy bars, etc. for the hubby & for when I could actually eat food.

A deck of cards & cribbiage board for all the downtime there is

One or two comfy outfits, but mostly spent time in the hospital gown.

Toothbrush, brush, toiletries (although I didn't really care too much to use any of it).

An outfit for the baby to come home in. The hospital will give you diapers when you are there.

The carseat - very important, but don't bother to bring it into the hospital until you are actually ready to leave.

Other than that, they pretty much take care of everything & even if you go in totally unprepared, your spouse, family, or friends will be more than happy to bring you anything your heart desires.

Just don't worry. It is not nearly as scary as it sounds!
