My mood while writing this blog: waiting waiting |
Sebastian has his ventilator out! He is doing very well off of it, but still has oxygen through the cannula(nose thing). He still breathes hard off and on but that should get better now that he's doing it on his own. We went to see him today and daddy got to change his diaper. Ok so he put it on backwards at first, but that's ok, he will learn LOL. They fed him through the line in his nose, and I even had a tiny bit for him as well! A whole 2ml they added to his formula. Im working on it though and hopefully my boobs will figure out what to do.
We got some pictures of him without the vent, but they are kind of blurry. They leave the lights off in his room (he has his own private room!) and it's hard to get decent shots. I'll add some of them later.
I dont think he will be coming home monday. That was just one of the nurses guesses. I want him home very badly, but I also want him healthy! He can stay in there as long as he needs to.
If anyone has any tips on how to get my milk production going, please let me know! Ive only just recently been able to get a few drops at each pumping. I pump every 3-4 hours for 15-25 mins. The nurses and lactation consultants just say keep up with the pumping. I'm at the point that I want to quit if I can't get any more than 2ml over 2 days worth of pumping. Im trying to keep positive though.

Monday, 21 Sep Yay for Sebastian!! About the pumping.... I tried everything to increase prosuction and could only get 9 oz per day at my highest. I ate a lot of oatmeal, drank 1 beer per day, and any other tip I could find online. My OB also prescribed Reglan to increase production. That took me from 4 oz per day to 9 oz per day. Still not enough to feed the baby. In hindsight, I really regret wasting so much time trying to pump for him when it obviously wasn't working. I REALLY wish I would have just given up earlier and let myself relax while he was in the NICU. CelticBabe2009 -
Sunday, 20 Sep I agree with everything the other two ladies have said....also go talk to the ladies at the Nursing Station (on Dupont, next to the hospital, across from Goulds). They were a big help to me and helping moms with breastfeeding is all they do.....check them out and tell them I sent you...I should be in to buy another Maya wrap this week for Fred.......They have a milk tablet that worked for me pretty well. Part of the problem may be that you need him to stimulate you.....if they will let you hold him while you pump it might help....a lot of moms have trouble pumping away from their babies in the beginning.....your breasts are not really sure what to do until they are shown and stimulated to respond.... kickboxerbaby -
Sunday, 20 Sep So glad to hear he is off the vent. You have all been in my prayers. Don't stress about the breast milk. You will produce less if your stressed. Try to relax before you do it.; Medela makes a really good pump that does both breast at once and has really good suction. It's an automatic so it keeps a pretty steady flow. Also try milkmaid tea - Babiesrus sells it and it has funalgreek in it which I have heard works wonders. Also and you can check with the doc about this but I was also told that beer with or without alcohol in it also helps boost milk production. Lastly try to do it at the same time everyday. It helps if your body is on a schedule. I know it sounds weird but think of it this way. Cows come in to be milked everyday 3 times a day at the exact same time. This ensures maximum milk production. (Sorry i am a farmers daughter) Lastly stay hydrated. Drinking plenty of water helps alot to. Good luck I hope it helps. GeorgiaBear -
Sunday, 20 Sep This is great news about Sebastian! I had a bit of an unsuccessful breastfeeding experience, but a few things that might help - forgive me if you've heard them all before...... a good pump can definitly be worth it: expensive, but you can rent. When you have a chance to feed him directly, that might kickstart things for your body. Lastly, I took a drug called domperidom or motilliam which is actually a digestive aid that has a side effect of increasing milk production - it's off label use in Canada, but it is perscribed for breastfeeding here a lot. Believe me, if you can get your milk to come in this won't be an issue. Anyway, best of luck, but if the breastfeeding doesn't work out, please don't beat yourself up about it. You've still had this wonderful little person added to your life!
