09-6-2009 - Losing Lucy shockedMy mood while writing this blog:
shocked

My daughter Lucy is 8 years old and she is the kind of girl who loves her clothes, wants to wear make up and high heels (i don't let her), loves music and is always singing.

well one day last week she was in the living room singing away to herself. i wasn't paying too close attention as she sings most days anyway (mostly Girls Aloud / Sugababes etc or made up songs). Well anyway, she was singing away to herself and she sang this one line that made me snap my head up and look at her (my head snapped up so fast i almost gave myself whiplash lol). The line i heard her singing was

"You know that boy next door, he got me on the floor"

Well needless to say i just about had a heartattack. i managed to get her to stop singing the song and told her that it wasn't very appropirate for someone of her age to be singing songs like that. Well obviously she wanted to know why so i told her that the words were really for someone a lot older than her and i didn't want her singing songs like that. She then goes on to say to me

"Is it because it's about (giggle giggle) S-E-X"

OMG my heart just about stopped beating, i really didn't know what to say or do so i just decided to go with the truth kindof and tell her yes it was and that is why she shouldn't be singing it.

She then went on to tell me that she wasn't having any kids when she was older and she was going to get some Condoms. and then she wanted to know what condoms did. so i just told her they stop babies being born. So she says good i'll get some of them then.

OMG Ladies why is it that today's children are growing up so fast. i mean she's 8 years old. when i was 8 years old i probably wouldn't have even been able to pronouce Condoms let alone know what they were for.

Any advice on how to deal with akward questions from 8 year olds will be greatly appreciated.

xxxxx

Don't they grow up fast? All you can do is be honest and open. It is so important that kids know from thier parents about how wonderful it can be if you understand the responsibility that goes along with it. Otherwise, they just get a glamerized picture from the media and friends who don't quite understand. But...then again...i only have a one year old so I have no real advice for you...lol! Good luck raising your growing girl!

LOL. This made me laugh. Kids are so funny, I remember when I was about that age, I knew exactly what sex was. But I asked my mum where babies came from anyway. We were on a long journey so we stopped off at a little chef, and I must have had the devil in me that day because when the waiter came round I blurted out, "So it's the man sperm that makes babies when you have sex" IMy mum went red and the waiter kind of carried on walking as if he wasn't meant to come to our table. I knew what I was doing and don't really know why I did it. I guess I just thought it was funny.

I think it is good she knows what it is because you can stress the importance of it. Also don't make a big deal about because as she get older she may feel embarrassed. If she doesn't feel embarrassed at least you know she will more likely be more open with you when the time does come. Although hopefully not for another 8 years lol.
