| 06-10-2009 - Would you get an Amnio to test for Down's?? |
My mood while writing this blog: Ok |
Hey everyone! Since my 18th week of pregnancy my OB has been monitoring an echogenic focus in my lil girl's heart. For those of you unfamiliar it is sometimes a marker for Down Syndrome. They said due to my age they did not test my blood- nor do they think I had anything to worry about- I have had many ultraounds to check and the spot is STILL in her heart after 14 weeks. To make things worse Im getting the run around and they really have not told me what it is, or what problems it could cause. They have this wait and see attitude even though Ive been asking questions. I dont get any straight answers. Do you think I should get the amnio for D/S- would you if it made you feel better- just to know one way or the other? I love my lil girl no matter what I am just anxious and feel Ive gotten the run around and wanting a straight answer or solution.

Wednesday, 7 Oct I went through the same exact thing that you are going through now. They found a marker for downs at my 18 week appt. My husband and I were devastated! No, we wouldn't terminate the pregnancy or anything if we found out our little one had downs, but I couldn't go the rest of the pregnancy not knowing. I think there is a lot of preparation to do knowing that you are going to have a special needs child. And the stress alone of not knowing could have been harmful to the baby. I called my sister, who works in NICU, to get the details of the amnio and she assured me that the risks are not what they used to be due to the technology. And the Dr doing the amnio said he had never had a miscarriage and assured me that everything would be ok. So, we did the amnio. We waited and cried for 2 days for the fish results to find out that the test was negative. And then got the 100% for sure negative test results back in 2 weeks. I know that some may think it was selfish for us to get it done, but I needed the assurance. I needed to know what I was in for...how to prepare. I would still love him the same no matter the result. But, I cried for days over this. I don't know how I would have a "stress-free" pregnancy without knowing. Good luck to you!! carly79 -
Tuesday, 6 Oct i personally wouldn't......there is a risk with those to aren't there? i know they told me that my baby had cysts in its brain..they didn't a level 2 u/s later and all but one was gone..and then they told me that even if they don't go away it wouldn't even hurt the baby......do what you need to do though... hang in there....isn't it crazy how much we worry and love them already.... angela32 -
Tuesday, 6 Oct The question is are you going to do anything differently about the preg if she does have it?If the Dr is really concerned about it being Downs Im sure he would have suggested the amnio. You really do not have much longer to wait....I personally wouldn't but I understand your urgency to want to know! I had my first baby at 22 yrs old and I took that triple screen test to determine what chances of my baby having downs were---well big mistake!!!They told me at 14-15 weeks that she probably had downs so make a long story short they do all her measurements in an U/S and then they tell me well it really doesn't look like she does!Ok but I still had to wait 25 more weeks to find out forsure! So I give birth and no she doesnt have it! Ive never taken another one of those tests cuz I figure If I have one with downs Im not terminating so it is what it is! Hang in there Im sure your baby is fine ,sounds like your DR isn't tooo concerned either!
