09-12-2008 - My OB Dr quit on me today!

Well I got a phone call this morning from my Dr's office and they say, "We are sorry to inform you but your Dr. is taking a Medical Leave of absence starting immediately and will be gone for 3 months. We are more than happy to set you up with another Dr here in the office or help you get set up somewhere else if you would prefer." OMG I cried and cried. She has only been my OB Dr for over 10 years with the exception of the 1 1/2 years I moved away from here. She delivered my oldest son 8 years ago and I don't want anyone else but her. I have a special picture of her holding Cody after he was born and I wanted that same picture with Benjamin and her. All of her partners are MEN. I know all women have their preference on rather they want a male or female OB Dr and I prefer a woman. I don't know I guess I just feel weird about some other man going down there except my man. Plus a woman has been through what other women go through. No man has ever experienced the things we go through. A male Dr may be just as good and may have all the knowledge he needs to have but a female has been there done that and knows without reading all the books what you are going through. My heart just broke, I can't even tell you how I feel right now. The high risk Dr said since they switched me to one of the other Drs in her office to try that and if I'm not happy he will set me up with another women he knows. Not very many of the Drs deliver at the hospital I want to deliver at and I'm not switching hospitals. My High Risk appointment went well today. They upped my Diabetic meds dosage and said my boy weighs approximately 5 pounds 3 ounces. Which puts him right on target to where he should be at 33 weeks. I guess Friday I get to see the new OB Dr and see if I like him or not and go from there. The High Risk Dr also told me it would probably be hard to find a Dr to take me this late in the pregnancy except her partners of course. This is crunch time...I wish I would have known sooner so I could research Drs a little before I decide on someone.

I've never had a female OB so I have nothing to compare to. But the "old man" I have now has delivered thousands of babies and I really like him. He's a little quirky but shore as heck knows what he's doing!

Good luck and keep and open mind. Change can be good. =)

I've always had a women until I switched when got prenant this time. I used to have the same mindset as you. I'm in the same practice but picked a guy...late 40's thet was recommended by the nurses there. He is by far WAY better than she was. I wish I switched years ago. He has the best bed side manner. When I was sick in the begining he said his wife was the same way and would always listen and is very cautious. Anyways, try to stay open minded.

I don't blame you at all about wanting a female doctor! With my first child, my midwife went on vacation the week I was due and ended up getting snowed in and could not come to my delivery! Her partner ( a male) ended up delivery my son. Thank God he did! He saved my sons life and I ended up going to him for my next pregnancy. Good luck!! I know it will all work out for you!!

Oh my gosh, that sucks!!! I'm sooo with you on needing the female doc who understands. I'll pray you find a great new OB!
