I work at a privately owned company that has some bogus rules, but I love my job. In our handbook we are allowed to take a vacation around July 4th and Christmas time only. In April I had my year anniversary and received 5 paid days to use for the whole year until January 2010. That is vacation, sick days, and all other time off. We do not get to accrue any type of time. I have about 30 people in our office. About 3 or 4 had requested to take their vacation time around the 4th. I was not planning to take a vacation, because I can't afford it. The president of the company got upset because people had requested off, and closed our office from June 29-July 3. I was so pissed! I can't afford to take a week of unpaid time off. I have bills out of the wazoo that need to be paid. My son is in daycare and I have to pay $100 a week for him. I have asked if I could work, but the office will be closed, so I'm screwed! Now I will be playing catch up and it is really hurting my pockets. My 30 year old bf is a cook at Sonic, and he is so comfortable working less than 30 hours and bringing home a check of $300 if that much every 2 weeks. I tried to talk to him about getting a new job, but he took it as me looking down on him. What am I supposed to do? I pay all the bills! I am trying not to be stressed because I don't want to compromise the baby, but damn I am tired of everyone's b.s. Sorry I just had to vent!!!!

Wow. I've never heard of an office completely shutting down for an entire week. That's kind of childish of your boss to basically through a hissy fit and close. I hope that everything works out in the end. Cut costs as much as you can on unnecessary stuff. I always ask myself now, "Do I want this or do I need this?"

Honey, that is tough! I hope he realizes $300 a week a Sonic isn't going to support a new baby! Just don't stress, as hard as it is not too. Some things may just have to be late, like certain things I'm sure you could call and they'd be understanding. If you let places know you will be late, they are more willing to work with you. =] It will all work out.
