30-7-2009 - High blood sugar... gestational diabetes okMy mood while writing this blog:
ok

Well I've been diagnosed with gestational diabetes. Yuck! My doctor wanted to do a glucose test early because I have PCOS. I had my glucose levels checked before I got pregnant and they were perfect! Well last Thursday I did the 1 hour test and failed by 1. Grrrr. So today I did the 3 hour test and failed by 1... again. Grrrr! I'm grateful it's not severe. It could have been much worse. Maybe if they would have waited until 28 weeks I would have had a 12 pound baby inside of me. This truly is a blessing in disguise. I was upset when I first found out. The thought of not eating any chocolate for 5 1/2 more months. I can't eat anything with Splenda in it, I'm allergic to it. Ahhh!

But I talked to my Mom and she said this so easy to remedy naturally. By having a balanced diet and exercise I won't have to take any meds. or insulin shots. I can have the occasional chocolate. I just can't go crazy. I've been keeping a food diary and I basically have a good diet. I just have to cut back on the chocolate and the fruit. Everything in moderation! A good thing about GD is that it will really keep my weight under control. I'll probably not gain anything. So far I've lost 8 pounds. We'll see!

I'm meeting with the nurse tomorrow (who is also a good friend of mine) and she's going to show me how to test my blood. I plan on being the best patient they every had. Perfect numbers everytime they see me and never having to use meds. or insulin. =)

When faced with sorrow or doubt I play the glad game (after I've had a good cry). I'm glad they caught it early, I'm glad I have already been eating right, I'm glad I'm healthy enough to have a good exercise routine, I'm glad that I'll probably get some extra sonograms later in the pregnancy. This too shall pass. I'll keep a smile on my face and a good positive attitude.

I had GD during my pregnancy and it was actually a positive thing in the end! I kept my weight gain during pregnancy at a very minimum and my baby was still 7 1/2 healthy pounds. It's not just the sweets and fruit you have to watch out for - it's the carbs. They are the WORST as they turn to sugar in our bodies - so be aware of rice, potatoes, pasta and bread. Even cereal - the healthy bran kind, brown bread, brown pasta and brown rice spiked my levels. So I avoided all carbs in the end. I like dark, dark chocolate and it didn't seem to affect my readings at all. Also, I ate 0% sugar ice cream and I was fine! Another tip is to try and have a protein of some kind just before you go to bed so that if you don't spike during the night. I ate an apple and peanut butter or an apple and drank a glass of milk. I monitored 4 times a day and I had such a great diet, I wanted to keep it up after the birth but I am breastfeeding and the lactation specialist advised me to NOT follow that diet while breastfeeding. Oh and the day after I gave birth to my daughter - my blood sugar was completely normal! Good luck!! It's really not that bad!!! xox

Awww, I'm sorry to hear about this, but you're so right about them detecting it early. I love your glad game! Best of luck, my thoughts are with ya!
