06-4-2009 - More breastfeeding tidbits... HappyMy mood while writing this blog:
Happy

As I was sitting around today and thinking of my last blog, I realized that I had mainly focused on supply issues. There are other things that popped into my head that I thought I'd share as well. This is just a completely random post of whatever comes to me as I am sitting here at the computer. For any of you veteran breast feeders, any input you can provide is welcome. Knowledge is power. Because many of the previous generations didn't nurse, alot of information just isn't there to pass along to the next group of mothers. Yes, there are books, and doctors recommend breast feeding, but I am so thankful that my mother and grandmother bucked the system and nursed 7 children between them. They had first hand info to give me, they have been in the "trenches" and gone through it themselves. It makes it that much harder to breastfeed when you don't have the knowledge or the support! For some people it is easy to bf, for others it isn't. Knowing what is "normal" makes things easier all around. And, always think about who is giving you advice. Chances are, if it's a male or a woman who's never bf, the answer is always going to be "give 'em a bottle". That is the way our society thinks for the most part. I was told that I was trying to turn my son into a "Momma's Boy" by nursing him....WHAT??!! My point is, after all this rambling, that we need to help each other and share what we know. I am so thankful for the breastfeeding forum because it give everyone the ability to give and receive support. So anyway, here are a few points...
  • 3 Tbsp. in a diaper is what is considered "wet"- do this yourself if you are having doubts as to whether your little one is getting enough (I know this can be a major concern)
  • Breastfeeding CAN be painful even with a proper latch but that is generally the biggest source of nipple pain in the beginning
  • Breastmilk is a wonderful cure for cracked or blistered nipples
  • Biting is normal but correctable- don't give up. When bub is actively nursing they cannot bite so watch for cues that they are done, and try not to let them make a game out of biting mommy
  • Just because you no longer leak or feel heavy, doesn't mean you have no milk- it just means your body has adjusted and you aren't making extra
That's all that is coming to me at the moment...and Riley wants to eat. Happy breastfeeding!

Thanks - reading up more-- this is my 3rd baby ( all breastfed) He is now teething at only 4 months and biting is happening more as well as a lot of squrming and movement. Some feeds good others not-- He was such an amazing nurser from day one but now is acting like a sleepy head during many! It is fustrating! Being he was so good to start I thought it couldn't get easier or better - but yet figured that somehow it would as it did with my others. Maybe not. He is constanly pulling my hair or necklace swatting and grabbing my nursing shawl all over and kicking! If I hold his hand to keep him still he will grunt or make noises! Hmm.. I have liked being able to nurse him anywhere but it is getting harder.. Any help would be great!

Another thing i can think of is that babies will feed for longer and more often when they are going through a growth spurt. This can easily be confused as your milk not being enough. It is, they just feed more to increase your supply. The best advice i could have been given at the start is to feed long and often to get a good supply at the start.
