14-6-2008 - Weight fixations!! Geeesh OkMy mood while writing this blog:
Ok

I find it really disturbing that many pregnant women seem to fixate on their weight. The only posts I've read, regarding weight, are about women who haven't gained any weight, lost weight, or are worried because they've gained a whopping 6 pounds! My doctor told me that I've gained the "normal" amount of weight at this point, which is around 10 pounds. He said that many years ago the average weight gain of a pregnant woman was around 28 pounds. Now, he says, that "average" has changed to 35 to 45 pounds. Take into consideration that every woman is different and every female body responds differently.

Many people have complimented me on my pregnant appearance. My fiancé tells me how gorgeous I look as a healthy pregnant woman! I feel beautiful and proud of my baby bump and wider hips. I am reveling in everything that pregnancy has to offer (including the temporary weight gain). It's just that we have sooooo much to worry about as it is, why let society's perception and objectification of women skew our image of ourselves at what should be a joyous experience?

Having had experience working with many anorexic and bulimic women, and having worked in a feminist environment in the past, it is beyond me as to WHY a pregnant woman would be in the least concerned about gaining a few pounds during her pregnancy?!?! (unless, it is a serious health matter that her doctor has advised her of). So, I will not read/respond/support anymore posts about pregnant women lamenting a minimal weight gain. I want to read about proud, inspiring, relatable women! The women who aren't talking about their "normal" weight gain for fear of being judged by others. I want to see pictures/read stories and experiences of glowing, round, curvy, beautiful PREGNANT WOMEN!!!

You know, in the beginning of this pregnancy, my hubby was SCARED that I'd blow up. (probably from seeing me pack on 50 lbs from Depo shot).

Personally I've always had problems with my weight but never been Anorexic or Bulemic. Just overly fixated on my weight.
At first I was happy that I hadn't put on a ton of weight, but as the weeks creep by and I"m only gaining literally 1/4lb a week or less it's concerning me that I can't gain just a little more weight. I'm 27 weeks and as of Friday put on a whopping 7.9lbs! lol. that's sarcasm.
I started out at 5'8 177 lbs so not little, but avg. for a woman my height and starting weight is about 10-14lbs...... I can completley understand why some girls are obsessed over a few lbs. if it's in like 1 week. but it is rediculous to see those TINY girls cry about 15lbs at 12 weeks.....It drives me nuts!

Im right there with you on this issue- This is such a special time for a woman and it amazes me how many people obsess over thier own weight. I find it a bit selfish and have to hold myself back from telling people on here to shut up about it!
