12-7-2008 - Update on the thrush... OkMy mood while writing this blog:
Ok

So as some of you know, me and baby Summy have been dealing with thrush since she was born. It was a real pain in the butt (as well as the nipples) and it took forever to get rid of.

Part of our problem is that we live in a very hot, humid, moist, tropical climate...which just feeds on yeast. (Thrush is basically a yeast infection in the baby's mouth.) So because of the climate alone, it made it hard to get rid of. Top that off with nursing all the time, using a nipple shield (at first), pumping and just washing, not boiling the parts after each use, not changing my breast pads all the time (because I just didn't know) and chi-chi's leaking milk 24/7 and you have a problem.

Anyway, I became obsessed with trying to get rid of this thing. It made me itchy, and miserable and it was so painful to nurse my toes would curl and I would sob just to get through it. Some days the pain was up my armpit, and around to my back. Plus Summy's little belly hurt so bad from the yeast building up in there. It made her gassy and fussy almost like she had colic.

Super fun for all involved.

It was hard to get support with treating it. Once you have it, simply not breastfeeding any longer and switching ot bottles will not cure it. You need to get rid of it and kill the yeast. Then I found out that yeast can grow back after an hour and a half...so it was a struggle.

My Pediatrician told me that I should switch to formula because "it won't kill her." She said that her mom only gave her formula and "they let (her) into medical school and everything."
...it was so condescending and patronizing and we were totally insulted. Of course formula isn't gonna kill her. But I wanted to breastfeed, I was adamant about it and I was looking for breastfeeding support and she kept telling me to switch to formula and try the Neutramagen (sp) or whatever because it will be better on her belly...better than breastmilk?? I don't think so. I'm not a formula hater. I realize that some moms can't breastfeed for whatever reason but wish they could or that some choose not to and that is their choice. Just as it is mine to breastfeed exclusively...and my own Pediatrician wasn't being supportive of that.

...we no longer go to that Pediatrician.

My MIL thought I was causing the baby to have thrush, it was all my fault and if I just stop breastfeeding her it will go away. I am a bad, horrible mom for turning her mouth purple with the gentian violet treatments (and she refused to take any pictures of her while her mouth was purple!!!) and she accused me of basically doing crazy home remedies that I found off the internet as opposed to doing what the doctor said. Even after I told her that my mom's neighbor, who is a lactation consultant told me to do these things. But she's "not a doctor, and doctors know better". I disagree with that statement when it comes to breastfeeding. It seems like most doctors don't have the first clue when it comes to breastfeeding. My mom's neighbor has been an RN for like 20+ years and a lactation consultant for about 15+ years. At her hospital, she is in charge of "teaching" breastfeeding to the doctors. There might be a small chapter in a book they have to read at some point in their med school career, but not much beyond that. So she has a class where she talks about breastfeeding, latching on properly, common problems, etc. She said that over the years a several week class has turned into a ONE HOUR LECTURE on breastfeeding!!! She said that they get most of their breastfeeding knowledge from the formula companies...how does that make any sense?? So basically if you have a pain behind your right eyeball, you are going to go see an eyeball specialist and not a general doc. So if you are having breastfeeding problems you should see a breastfeeding specialist; a lactation consultant and not a general pediatrician. Makes sense to me. It just took me a while to figure it out!

Thankfully my mom and husband were supportive of my wanting to continue to breastfeed. In the back of my mind I kept hearing my grandma saying, "this too shall pass", so I kept plugging away knowing that one day it will get better. My toes will no longer curl when she latches on (and continue throughout the duration of the feeding), my baby will no longer scream from the pain, and I will no longer have the nagging feeling if I am in fact doing something wrong.

We also realized that the little mittens we kept on her hands (to keep from clawing out her eyeballs) might be a contributing factor to the thrush. She was constantly putting her hands in her mouth, and although I was washing her mittens daily in super hot water...the yeast grows back after an hour and a half...so it might have gotten on the mitten and stayed there and she was reinfecting herself every time she put it back in her mouth.

After doing many, many treatments and even took a trip to Ca to get out of the moist climate for a while, it dawned on my hubby to take off her mittens for a while to see if that might be it and sure enough I think it was!

So I didn't really want to say it out loud cuz I was afraid to jinx it, haha, but I think it's gone! After 3 months...we are finally nursing without pain and discomfort!

Thank goodness!

Thanks for all the support with it too! If anyone needs the info on what I did to try to get rid of it, let me know and I'll post all the info.

I can't believe your pediatrician. I would have flipped out! I am so glad that it is gone - and I am so proud of you for continuing. I think about the breast pad - I am going to be extra extra careful...

Best to you and Summer
