| 30-8-2009 - Saturday night trip to the ER | My mood while writing this blog:ok |
Yesterday we were at the beach since it was beautiful out. We were doing the usual things, playing in the water and sand and having a great time. There was a few wasps hanging around but no more than usual. Anyways, I (and everyone else around) was doing a pretty good job keeping the bees away from Journey, until one really aggressive one flew up and landed right on her face. My mom was the closest to her so she went to swat it off but before she could it stung my baby :( Journey got her first wasp sting right on her face, on the skin that is just above the lip. Ofcourse everyone jumping up and rushing at her didnt really help, so besides the sting she was scared. She was screaming and I was freaking right out. I was crying almost as hard as she was and I was panicking - even though there are no history of allergies on my side and I dont think there is on the otherside (im not 100% sure) I was totally freaking out. She was so worked up she was kind of shaking her head (since her face hurt from the sting) and she was crying so hard I panicked and thought she was having problems breathing. Anyways, she did calm right down after a few minutes of me holding and soothing her. We packed up and left the beach after determining she wasnt having an immediate fatal reaction. I got home and called the nurses hotline and they asked me a bunch of questions and said since she wasnt having any reaction I didnt really need to worry but to keep an eye on her for the next few hours and make sure she didnt develop a reaction. I wasnt too freaked out anymore since the longer you get away from it before something happens the less severe the reaction would have been. About 5 mins after hanging up with them the nurse called me back and said that I actually did need to take her to see a doctor since she is under 18 months she has not completed some immunizations and she might require an extra booster shot since bee's can carry tetnus (I had no idea). So down to the ER we went, on saturday night. Luckily it was not busy when we got there and we got to see a doctor pretty quick. He wanted us to wait an hour for observation incase she developed a reaction because I guess if it was going to happen it usually happens in the first three hours. She ended up being fine, the swelling in the area went down and we made it home by just after 10pm. Today you cant even really see where she got stung and she is back to her happy perfect self.
The scary thing is, apparently it is the second sting or bite when you find out if theyre allergic. Again, I dont think she will be, but its a scary thought and I am hoping we make it until shes much older before she gets stung or bit again.
Anyways, luckily for us everything turned out okay.
