16-3-2009 - Some recommendations (I posted this in response to someone\'s blog, but thought I\'d share it with others as well) PeachyMy mood while writing this blog:
Peachy

As for things I couldn't live without with my last son:

1. The generic boppy pillow from Target - I actually have two now so I don't have to rely so much on keeping the first one clean. I nursed him & found it to be the best way to stay comfortable when he was so tiny.

2. A changing table. I know a lot of people do not invest their money in a changing table, but it makes life a lot easier & puts less strain on your body if you don't have to change the baby in an uncomfortable spot all of the time.

3. A travel system including a car seat, car seat base, and stroller that are all compatible & click together with ease. This was probably the greatest thing we bought for the baby. The car seat bases are a must have in my opinion.

4. A baby tub that fits in the sink. You don't use it very long before the baby grows out of it, but it sure comes in handy for the first few months.

Things I thought were overrated include:

1. Baby monitors - My house is not that big & I didn't use it all that often. I think they are important to have, but you don't need one the second you bring the baby home from the hospital.

2. Lots of bottles. My son only liked the regular old playtex nurser bottle. I had so many fancy expensive bottles that he refused to use, I would advise people not to get carried away before they bring an opinionated baby home from the hospital.

Another thing I would recommend is getting a mobile for the crib that is battery operated and on a remote. The one I had for my first son was a crank up kind & it only played for a few minutes. Most of the time he wouldn't quite be asleep when it would finish playing & if I cranked it up again, he would wake back up. It was aggravating!

One of the greatest things my friends did for me when planning my baby shower was in how they did the invitations. With each invitation, they included a note that said an additional prize would be given to guests who brought diapers. They specified what size diapers to bring (I would advise getting more size 2, 3, & 4 diapers than anything else, I still have size 5 & 6 diapers from my shower to use as my son transitions into those sizes). Some people thought it was crazy to bring such big diapers, but really he changed three diaper sizes in his first four months of life. It is so unpredictable, you hate to get too many things that are in the small sizes because they grow so amazingly fast. My friends spent around $20 on a big gift basket of soaps, lotions, candles, etc. from Costco to be the prize for this drawing, but I must have gotten $500 worth of diapers in exchange. It was awesome.

The best diapers out there are pampers, but pampers wipes are horrible.

Huggies have OK diapers, but their wipes are awesome! They are nice and thick and big.

Sorry to leave such a long message, I just know how much I wanted advice when I was first pregnant & hope that my experiences can now help others.

Best wishes to all of you!!! Andrea

This is great advice. I agree with everything you said, particulary about the Boppy pillow and the Huggies wipes. I wish I had kept my Boppy from my first pregnancy! I also loved the gowns with the mitten foldover hands. It made it a breeze to change him during the night quickly without having to fuss with all the zippers and snaps when they are kicking their little feet all around. And the fold over hands are better at night because they can't fall off and them scratch themselves like the others can. I am getting soooo excited to have this baby and bring him home. I cannnot wait to see his little face!

All good stuff. A friend of mine also told me that everytime she went to the store, she would buy a pack of diapers. It didn't matter what size. She had the closet under her staircase full of diapers. She said it really came in handy when they were short on cash and in need of diapers.

thanks for the advice! i know someone who did the diaper thing at her shower and thought it was a freat idea. Also, i used to work in a daycare for years, so i know my baby will be using papmers diapers (hopefully no allergies or anything!). the one thing i have been thinking about was whether we needed an actual changing table, but i think we do now! I am trying to find a small dresser thats at the right height to change diapers so i can put a pad on it and use it as a changin table. Thanks again for all the advise :)

Having been through 4 kids I have to agree with much of what you have posted and think that you have given some great advice. I 100% agree about the travel system. I had my first two without one....what was I thinking? Never again. You guys have so many better ones down in US. We only really have one girl patterned one available to us up here in Canada. I am thinking a shopping trip in Kalispel is in order for me very soon!

Another thing I have noticed is that you guys seem to go all out on baby showers. I have never had one thrown for me with 4 kids. I just threw on for my girlfriend this past weekend and people thought I went all out. All I did was plan 3 games, do a cheers, finger foods and Crave cupcakes(Calgary's best ever cupcakes), a diaper cake, prizes (Tim Horton's gift cards) and makes the game supplies myself. Girl friends of mine had never seen a baby shower like it. It was for my best friend so I made every effort, but it still seems like you guys go to a lot more trouble down there. I wish others would do that for expecting moms up here.

Anyways, enough of my babbling. Great advice!
