17-11-2008 - Belly sleep scared of SIDSMy mood while writing this blog:
scared of SIDS

I should have added this to my last blog but sometimes when Jesse is fussy the only thing to do to get him to sleep is putting him on his belly. He immediately curls up and closes his eyes. My hubby and I discussed it and he said the same thing I think. He can hold his head up and moves his head to what side he wants it on and sometimes switches while asleep. I can sometimes get him to sleep on his back though. But I'm scared to death of SIDS and wonder how many other mothers let them belly sleep sometimes too! If I lay him on his side he ends up on his belly. What do you guys think?? My son is 14 and they told us then to let them sleep on their bellies not their backs and now they have switched it!

Hi i know i haven't had my baby/experience yet but I work in respiratory and with all the babies we experience in the ER, I've really come to the conclusion that SIDS has alot to do with proper development of the brain. Many factors such as improper nutrition from mom, smoking, drugs...etc. Just my opinion but if the baby is going to have a problem- its going to happen and there is simple nothing we can do about it. It went from belly, to side, and now to back sleeping and now to keeping a fan on, toys out of the way, no bumpers. Get real. You can bet our ancestors never went to this extreme and they had like 10 kids!

All of my babies were belly sleepers. I had to swaddle Nicholas very tightly until he was about 6weeks -2 months, but he just plainly slept betteron his tummy. The doctors go back & forth as far as back or tummy is concerned. As long as there is nothing obstructing his face or breathing space, I say let him sleep. Obviously this is just my opinion, but Dan and I both agreed that we are all fine & our mothers slept us on our tummies. Not only that, but Nicholas spit up once when he was on his back...I went to check on him & founf him barely breathing & bubbling formula out his nose & mouth. I had to jostle him a luttle so he'd startle & breathe properly...from then on, it was tummy only for him!

What I did with my little girl who is 16 months old is: Go to Walmart and get one of the postitioners. I know that's not what they are called but there purpose is to keep them from rolling. It is adjustable so as your baby grows you can make it larger. It works great. Trust me they can't roll until they get strong enough to push things.
