| 12-9-2009 - My Homebirth story | My mood while writing this blog:overjoyed! |
Well I started to have regular tightenings on Thursday 10th at about 9pm they were 8mins apart but not painful so off i went to bed thinking that it was nothing sinister
12pm arrived and i haddn't slept, just watched a film in bed, having a nice rest along with the tightenings whilst my dh slept next to me like a log (typical) I suddenly had a painful tightening (which i decided was a contraction rather than BH straight away) then another 5 mins later, after the third painful contraction still keeping to the 5 min distance i woke my dh to tell him labour had started.
We got up and made a cuppa, timed the contractions for a while and they stayed at 5 mins, lasting a min each so I called my mother to let her know, the inlaws to come and get my son and the Mw to let her know too.
Mum made her way over as did the inlaws and the MW decided she was going to come and check me over as she was 20 mins away.
My in laws arrvied after about an hour and took my son away with them (we had had a cuddle with him and given him some medicine and milk as he was very poorly before he went).
The midwife examined me and said I was 4/5cm's dialated, she decided she was going to stay with us then but she had to go to the hospital to get the entonox for me.
she came back after about 20 mins and my pains were then coming at about every 3 mins and getting more intense.
whilst she had gone we had set up a nice nest in the front room, water proofing pillows and quilts plus lots of things for me to lean on.
I used the tens machine as long as i was able too plus some pressure points i read up on and my breathing tecniques (which really do work btw).
at about 4am I decided to start with the Gas and Air as the contractions had got really quite bad by this point, and i was beginning to think that i wouldnt be able to manage much longer.
My midwife decided it was time to call the second midwife to get her to leave her house as she was about 20 mins away and told her that things were "beginning to hot up" lol!
I then realised that I was experiancing my transition stage because i started to get quite weepy (always a good sign) and started to feel a bit defeated.
My midwife was FANTASTIC at this point and recognised my transition, she performed some great accupressure on my lower back which helped with the pressure of babies head.
She then switched to being the person who's hand i held onto during the big contractions bless her .
So she decided she needed to pee quickly and hopped off to do so, mum switched to doing the pressure point for me and no sooner had she shut the bathroom door than i felt the urge to push and my waters broke.
My contractions then became constant and the urge to push was over whelming, luckily the MW heard my pushing from in the bathroom and came running.
Just as babies head was fully out and we were waiting for the shoulders, the second midwife walked through the door (perfect greeting i think lol).
Out came my beautiful baby boy after 6 mins of pushing at 4:20am 4 hours and 20 mins after labour started and only 10 mins before the time my mum guessed he would be born.
the position i gave birth in was on my knees leaning over my foot stool so baby came out behind me, as soon as he was born i asked my husband to take off my nightie and bra and as he did so my son was passed through my legs for me to hold and have some well deserved skin to skin contact.
this is something i did not have with my son and was determind to do this time around.
I sat back on my heels and just cried with joy at this little bundle that had appeared .
I opted for the placenta to be kept attached to my son until the cord stopped pulsating so i sat and had a lovely cuddle with my son and husband whislt we waited.
after a while the mw told me the cord had stopped so i hopped onto the sofa got wrapped in a blanket i had saved for the occasion and cuddled my son whilst my husband cut the cord.
I had discussed with my mw about NOT having the injection to speed up the placenta if we didnt need it so i gave my son to his daddy and i tried pushing a little to see if we could get the placenta out on its own.
Three small pushes later and it was out and intact.
I was examined and found to have had no tears, no grazes and my son was declared fit and healthy.
i went into a bit of shock due to the short labour and VERY short pushing stage, also i think the lack of pain relief shocked me too lol.
I lay on my sofa for a while nice and comfy and breastfed my new son a few times, he had 3/4 breastfeeds which we were very happy about.
We all had a nice cup of coffee and I had a kit kat as i was suddenly quite hungry lol and Nanny had a cuddle with her newest grandson.
My son was then weighed and found to be 7lbs 15oz which is the exact same weight as my first born, head circumference was 35cm again, exactly the same as my first born (and oddly they were both born on a friday after a 4 and a half hour labour! my body must be a control freak lol).
I then went off for a bath which was quite amusing actually because theres me walking up the stairs stark naked trying to hold a towl between my legs to stop any blood dripping on the carpet (in a rented house) and my mw following behind with another towel underneath from the back lol! VERY dignified i can tell you lol!
whilst i was in the bath, one midwife cleaned up downsairs with the help of my mother whilst my husband had a cuddle (or should that be the other way around i'm not sure), then the second midwife came to me and helped get some water proofing down on the bed and sorted out a nice big pair of pants and got my maternity pads all fixed in place for me and set out a couple of nice towles.
she helped me get out of the bath and get dried and into bed then my mum brought my son and brought him to me in bed ahhh, bliss.
my first midwife then went home as she was knackered bless her, it had been a long night for her and she had been on shift before coming to me as well.
My husband made us bacon sandwiches and my mum and i ate ours in my bed.
She then hopped off home herself and my step dad made his way over to meet the new arrival whilst we chatted to my father (in norway) on the webcam from our bed.
7:30 am and my parents leave us to get some sleep, my husband crawled into bed next to me, our new son in the crib the other side, it was perfect.
I cant believe I had such an amayzing birth, it knocked the socks of my first by far and i cant believe i didnt have a homebirth for my first and will never go into hospital for any subsequent babies.
