28-9-2009 - For Cat Owners... Bad Kitty! My mood while writing this blog:
Bad Kitty!

I have a cradle my grandfather made in my living room which we will use while we're in there and the kitchen. It's been there for 2 months and has sheets, a bumper, and infant positioner in it. I just noticed over the weekend the cat jumping on the couch and trying to get into it. I yelled her name and said no when I saw it. Then we left the house for a few hours and when we came home I saw her in it! I did the samething and picked her up out of it yelling at her. Later that day we left and came back and again she was in it. I this time picked her up by the back of her neck and yelled at her.

This morning I caught her with her front paws up on it like she was about to jump in it. I yelled at her and she did a little meow at me!

My question is how do I stop her from going into it? I don't want her cat furr all over the sheets as I heard from a pediatrician you should try to keep the baby away from cats for the first year! Might sound impossible- but I will NOT have her in or around the baby's sleeping area.

Any advice?

I have a device called a "Scat Mat" that I bought at Petsmart to keep my 3 dogs off the couch. Its basically a piece of plastic that you place wherever you dont want them on (couches, etc.) that has static electricity in it that shocks the crap out of their paws if they touch it, and believe me, your cat won't go near it again once she gets shocked once. Its worth checking out. It worked for my dogs! :)

get a spray bottle and fill it with water to spray her with when shes near it or even an air horn lol that would probably scare the crap out of her. but my best advice get rid of it lol............i hate cats thats why its my best advice lol!

Hi you could always try some balloons, which everytime you catch your cat in there you could pop one of them lol.. just a suggestion... i have 3 cats lol...

If you cant find a net that fits the craddle then i would try spraying her with water. But, when you do it do not let her see that you are the one spraying her as if she sees she may go in when you are watching and not care that you are spraying her. If none of those work then i would look at pet shops they have this little white thing that you set on/in and you set it and then leave and it will make a noise to scare them off and if the noise doesnt deter them then it sprays them with some safe stuff to get them to go away. I have never used one personally but, know people who have and said that it worked and was worth the money.I hope this helps and good luck!

get a can of spray air, the type you use to clean computers off. The dust stuff. Cats hate it if you spray it at them because it hisses and its cold and gets right to their skin. Also doesn't make bedding and stuff soaked like spraying water.

I think that when the baby comes, the cat might not want to be in there anymore, cos the baby will be a "stranger" to her. I know my cat didnt like Jayden at all, and where she used to sleep with me in my bed, when the baby came, she never even came to the room. But maybe getting something to cover it might also work, shame poor kitty!!!

OK... so I take it, it's a bassinet type of thing in your living room. So you can't exactly shut the door I imagine. Hmmmmm, they have these "mosquito net" type of things you can put around it. But, if you are in the living room, you can just keep an eye on the cradle to make sure the cat doesn't mess with it. Oh, also- any time the cat goes near the baby's cradle you can blast him/her with water from a squirt gun thingy. I've never done it but, I heard that workd. We have two cats, missy and JJ, and they are the LOVES of my life but, I don't want them around the baby either.

So I was trying to find some answers for you... and that crib tent that Shea suggested seems to be the most popular but i don't know if it will fit a bassinet... Here is a link to a whole discussion about this too. Lots of people seem to keep a spray bottle of water nearby before baby arrives and I know that used to work on our cats for almost anything when I was younger! http://community.babycenter.com/post/a14100095/how_to_keep_cats_out_of_bassinetcrib

Hiya, saw your blog in the updates section, hope you don't mind me nosing! I'd def wash the sheets before baby arrives and if possible, keep the cat out of the room where the cradle is. We've two cats and we're keeping them out of the nursery. If you cant keep her out of the room, then those mesh nets are meant to be good. Otherwise, all you can do is keep grabbing her out and telling her no, but all cat owners know that they aren't the most obedient creatures!

I don't have a cat, but I have seen mesh-like nets that people put over cribs to keep cats out. Not sure if they'd have something similar but smaller to put over a cradle though. Here's a link I found after a quick search - just to give you an idea of what I'm referring to. http://www99.epinions.com/reviews/Tots_In_Mind_Crib_Tent
