09-6-2009 - 19 week ultrasound.....good and bad news confusedMy mood while writing this blog:
confused

So today I had an u/s and an appointment with my doctor. Lets start with the good news. ITS A GIRL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I really didn't care, boy or girl, as long as my baby was healthy. My cervical length was checked again and it was 3.6 (anything over 3 is great) so I am not at risk for incompetent cervix. Also, my placenta has moved up a little, further away from the opening of my cervix. So I am no longer diagnosed with "marginal placenta previa." So after my u/s I had to sit in the waiting room to wait for the doctor. My fiance and I were so ecstatic, texting and calling everyone to share the great news. So then the doctor calls for me, which takes me to the bad news....

The doctor tells me that my baby has "omphalocele" which is a birth defect involving the abdominal wall. Some of the intestines are sticking out of the umbilical cord where the belly button should be. The doctor said this will have to be corrected through surgery after birth, and I will have to take my baby to a different hospital 50 miles away for the procedure. He seemed pretty hopeful and said that the baby would be fine otherwise, but after researching on google I have scared myself even more. I learned that there is a 40% chance that the baby could have other chromosome abnormalities or other defects, including heart defects.

Although he reassured me that everything else from the u/s looked fine, I am worried sick thinking "what if they missed something?" "what if he isn't telling me everything?" "what if he is trying not to scare me and not being 100% real about all of the possibilities?" My quad and serum blood tests (for chromosome abnormalities) came back negative, but the tests aren't 100% accurate. I am going to call my doctor back tomorrow to ask him more questions, because I sort of blacked out as he was telling me about it and I don't really remember what all he said. My fiance heard everything, but I want to hear it straight from the doctor himself. So please pray for me and wish me luck...

I'm sorry I'm really late on commenting on this blog. I just wanted to tell you I'm thinking about you and your little one and hoping everything turns out alright.

Thanks everyone, you are all so right! I am NOT going on google anymore. All I can do is trust my doctors and PRAY! I plan on watching that show some of you mentioned. It comes on again Saturday at noon.

I was able to talk to the nurse today and she made me feel better by answering some of my questions. She said that the omphalocele was very small, and that only a portion of the intestines are sticking out. Since it's small, there is a smaller chance of the baby developing any complications from the surgery. I will be getting u/s's every 4 weeks, to monitor the growth of both the baby and the omphalocene.

I am praying for a miracle, that the intestines will slowly grow into the abdomen. I don't want my little girl to have to go through surgery =(

But thanks to everyone for their concern and please keep us in your prayers.

Congrats on the little girl!
And what your baby has, I saw the exact same thing on Deliver Me lastnite. It's not very common, but is something that can be corrected after the baby is born. Stop googling. It seems to cause me so much stress also. I'll be praying for you and your baby. Just keep the faith & thank God for it not being something that cannot be corrected. Your baby is growing. God has a plan for that baby. When you get sad just remember that.

You and your little girl are in my prayers but there is a lot of hope out there for her. It is serious but it is not uncommon and I watched an episode of Deliver Me last night on DHC and one lady went through that exact thing but the surgery went great and the baby thrived and did well. He only had a small scar right on his belly button so that wasn't even noticable. But mother's can't help but worry about their children so good luck and bring all your questions to your next appt.

Hurray for the precious baby girl you'll be having in October, Amen to that! Listen girl, your first mistake was going on that damn Google!! Hey, I know we all do it, but a lot of the information you find can be misleading! Listen to your doctors, they are there to help you, and would not want to with hold any information from you! If anything they are going to WANT to tell you EVERYTHING that COULD go wrong/be wrong with your baby NOW, before she gets here so you can have time to adjust to the situation. I know around weeks 10-12 the intestines are bulged out into the umbilical cord and then after the baby's tummy grows large enough they will go into the baby. This small process just didn't happen with your baby, that is okay! I have heard of it happening and they just do it after the baby is born. The important thing is your baby is living, thriving, growing, and beautiful =) You are smart to make another appointment to talk to the doctor! I always have mind blanks when I get information, then I go home and think of a hundred questions I wish I asked. Ask if they'll do another ultrasound, I would think they'd want to, or even do a 3D/4D one to really get a good look at the baby. I wouldn't go doing one without your doctor's permission though, just because the techs at those facilitys are not trained to tell you any information on your baby's health. But maybe you could get one done at a local hospital. Well best of luck to you and your fiance! Sending you hugs, Cheryl
