| 16-1-2009 - please tell me what you think I should do |
My mood while writing this blog: confused and tired |
The doctor said at the appointment today that I
seemed very stressed, sleep deprived and had high bp, she prescribed me a
small dose of alprazolam (xanax to most of you) everynight -0.25 mg. I
was shocked and I told her it was category D. She said it was safe in
the last trimester as long as a larger dose and that it would help me
if it helped me sleep and got the bp and stress levels down. I really
don't think I am going to be taking it.
My bp is 130 by 90, which is borderline,
but my pulse rate was also high. And I have been sleeping max 2-3 hours
a night and not at all during the day. She said it was important for a
normal delivery that I get sleep, get stress down and make sure my bp
doen't worsen (especially since it runs in my family strongly). Xanax
is basically a sleeping pill/anti anxiety pill and it is listed as
category D. However, she seemed positive it would do me good. She said
it does damage only in the 1st trimester, the developmental stage. I am
confused. This is not one of usual worry-wart rants. I feel it is an
important decision and don't know where to turn to. If any of you have
info, please do share. (I am prone to clinical anxiety). I really need some help with this one.

Tuesday, 27 Jan Why not just ask the doc about pot? Maybe they can talk to you about the risks compared to xanax. I think it's better, but just because of what I've read over the years. Kanoj is on to something here... SunnyMom -
Saturday, 17 Jan I have no phamaceutical knowledge for you but I won't even take a stool softner prescribed by my doctor...so that's how I feel about taking meds during pregnancy. I just boosted my fruit and fiber. Perhaps you can find a holistic alternative? Try learning how to meditate if you don't already do so and research natural stress relievers. Can you go to see an alternative practitioner for advice?? That's what I would do in your situation. Bonbon81 -
Friday, 16 Jan Hey bear i would maybe call a few pharmacies and talk to a few pharmacists and get their opinions. Like lilma said your doc wouldnt give you anything that will do harm to your baby (i would hope). But if you want piece of mind get other professional opinions. Let us know what you find...good luck girl! JanetN -
Friday, 16 Jan Maybe you would feel better to get a second opinion. Also, remeber Xanex is highly addictive. I would get another opinion before I decided on what to do. The dosage is quite low though.....Sorry, I know i am no help. lilmamaaua -
Friday, 16 Jan Feels I am sure that your doctor wouldn't prescribe you anything that would harm you or the baby. There are a lot of medicines that cannot be taken until after the first trimester. Perhaps if you called the pharmacist or another doctor that you might get more piece of mind but I think you should be fine to take the meds as 2-3 hrs of sleep is not helping you at all and I agree that a warm glass of milk is certainly not going to help you out sleep wise.
