My mood while writing this blog: curious |
Hi, I know this debate could go on forever but can you give me your opinion on the swine flu vaccination? I'm not looking for information on the virus more things like,
whether you have been offered it yet
do you think you'll take it?
were you lettered by your doctor/midwife to ask if you wanted it?
Did your doctor/midwife insist you take it?
A few weeks ago the midwife told me they were playing this down. Now on the news this evening it will be offered to pregnant women from next Wednesday.
I am worried about taking it, but am increasingly becoming more worried about not taking it.
Any thoughts?
thanks x

Friday, 16 Oct although i'm not pregnant now i too am thinking about this shot because it will apparently be offered to babies too. From what i've heard from Dr's and nurses (i have several in my family) the effect of swine flu on pregnant women can be very severe so if i were pregnant now i think i would take it.. same for my maddy, i think if/when it's offered i'll probably give it to her as i've heard the flu this autumn will be worse than the one that hit us in the summer. 2 baby friends of maddy's have already had swine flu and it took them a couple of weeks to get over it. kplum -
Thursday, 15 Oct At first I was not going to get it, but my Dr recommends it and all of the doctors in my sisters hospital recommend it as well (she is a NICU nurse in a different state than me). They all say yes it is new, but it is made the same way that the regular shot is made. I cannot imagine all of these Dr's recommending something that could be harmful - we ARE their patients. And the H1N1 is affecting pregnant women much worse than the regular flu. So, yes, I will get it when it comes to our city. I am getting the regular flu shot as soon as my OB gets it back in (they ran out before I could get it).Good luck! aussiegirl80 -
Thursday, 15 Oct I asked my Doctor this question last week. She suggested that I waited to get the vaccine until later in pregnancy (about 25weeks) because she said that the vaccine that we have in Australia contains a small amount of Mercury which can cause problems when the fetus is still developing, but since later on the baby has all of it's organs etc that it is better to do it then (but that is also befor the next 'flu season' as well for us in Aust. my doc doesn't seem to think that I will get it before then). I think that since you are over half way through, you should be fine but I also think it is always a bit worrying when there haven't been many studies into the effects on unborn babies. Weigh up the pro's and con's and do what is right for you :) mi.familia -
Thursday, 15 Oct my son is supposed to be getting the H1N1 as well. its is spreading like wildfire here in northeast wisconsin-area schools are actually shutting down for days! nearly 40% of the student body was ill yesterday, and 29% of them were H1N1. if i were still pregnant...i would be right in line to get it also. i wanna protect myself and my family, even thou its a hard call. i saw something on the news the other night that a pregnant woman (and her unborn baby)died because of H1N1...that really scared me. roosa -
Thursday, 15 Oct I am worried about taking the flu shot, but even more worried to not take it. To answer your questions: when I saw my doctor 8 days ago he asked me if I had considered the shot, and he said that in his mind it really wasn't debatable. He has seen what the actual flu has done to other pregnant women. I trust my doctor very much and for that reason I will most likely get the shot as soon as it gets out (any day now). He says I will get a letter in the mail when it is available and I need to come to the actual clinic so they make sure I get the right one (not the live virus). Good luck on making the decision, it is not an easy one. xox
