19-2-2009 - 30 week appt.

My mood while writing this blog: happy & concerned

Well yesterday I went for my 30 week appt. Good news & bad news. Good news I've gained only one pound in the last month. A total of 6 lbs gain so far for entire pregnancy. YEAH! Bad news my iron is still low. Last week it was 7.9 and now it's been staying at 8.5. I have low iron due to gastric bypass surgery that I had almost 4 yrs ago. Really bad news Im unable to take iron pills b/c I don't have enough intestines to absorb them. So now Dr says I've got to get Iron IV infusion treatments. He says I'm going to have to get them every few weeks and today I had an appt with the oncology dr to see what exactly I will need. I went to the dr today and sure enough I now found out what side effects low iron has impacted on me. Symptoms have been low energy, weak, not wanting to eat, ill, cramps & charlie horse aches all over, nails breaking and not able to grow, all due to low iron. I was shocked. So dr tells me that even after having the baby I will need to continue to go to him every year to get these treatments for the rest of my life due to always having low iron. Well according to the dr he is going to give me the FULL dose so I wont have to go back every few weeks to get these treatments YEAH! He said that I will only have to go to him once a year for this treatment. Only bad fall is it will take 5-6 hrs for total time for me to receive the treatment. But at least its only once a year. He's also going to start giving me B12 shots every month to help with the low energy. Due to now only having 1 1/2 ft intestines b/c of surgery Im unable to take meds and have them absorb like their supp to. Thats why its really useless to even take vitamins b/c they just go right through me. As soon as my cervix begins to open they are going to do an induction. There's a particular dr in my dr's office that I feel uncomfortable with and my dr gave me the ok that as soon as I start getting to a 3 he's going to induce me. Of course that shouldnt be a problem since my last 2 children I was open to a 4 cm for a month. Imagine walking around feeling like your baby is about to come out, lol. so he may take her when im 38 to 39 weeks. Lets hope that I dont go into labor when this other dr is on call, lol. Baby measures at 30 weeks so even though I've been feeling sick at least its not bothering her. So now I can actually say Im literally ALL baby w/ the 6 lb gain since she weighs almost half of that. Lets just hope that once I get the iron treatment I dont start packing on the weight. So Im going in for my 6 hr treatment tomorrow. Wish me luck and I plan on bringing lots of stuff to do and read while I wait.

glad to hear baby is ok ,and i wish you the best of luck with your treatments and the vitamin b12 shots r nothing i get them once a month also because i had no energy just wanted to sleep all the time.but good luck.....
