14-7-2008 - doctor gall OkMy mood while writing this blog:
Ok

My mood is irritated, again. The doctor called me to set up an appointment to discuss with my husband and me the dangers of home birth and to have us reconsider a hospital delivery.

Outside medical care, he really has no business interfering with my birth plans. I am canceling the appointment. My medical relationship with him is over. If I have a serious problem, I will seek a general practitioner, who can then refer me to a gynecologist or obstetrician. I am 28 weeks, and our minds are made up. We are having a homebirth.

I have been disgusted with this doctor's lack of concern about my health and well-being and his overconcern with my birth plans. Last Thursday at my appointment with him (which he instituted, not me), he did not even tell me that every thing looked great. He vaguely mentioned that the results were good, and that was the only mention whatsoever of baby and labor. His focus was, once again, on his ability/inability to be there for me if something were to happen.

This situation is, in some ways, teeter-tottering on a civil liberties law suit, not enough to engage in one at this time. Maybe that's what needs to happen to keep women free in the U.S. Freedom to make good or bad choices. Freedom to choose. I am the last person who would want to sue anyone. Believe me. I would never sue indiscriminantly, but I would for liberty and if it was really prejudiced. It's just as bad as racism and inequality.

I find it sad to think how hard you have to battle for something that is so natural and that women have done for years. Obviously things can go wrong in labour and hospital transfers need to be done but things can go wrong driving a car and we don't ban those and make everyone take public transport.
I am greatful for the medical profession if I need it but until then I am happy to do things at home and not clinically. I've done both now and I know what I prefer.

you've had a rough go! at least you are sticking to your guns. How long will it take your midwife to get to your place? Babies have been born at home for hundreds and thousands of years, and an experienced midwife should be able to deal with any complication that arrives. That being said though, he is just doing his job and what he knows. For hundreds of years, women died during childbirth. Personally, i was glad to have a midwife and be at the hospital when things went down hill. I was low risk and never thought i'd end up being in surgery as I was such an advocate for doing things naturally. Still, if i had continued to deliver him breech, so many things may have gone wrong. I don't even like to think about it. One of the women in my prenatal class delivered at home. We did the birthing from within class. She went into labor fast and delivered fast. The midwives were there (she had 2) only 20 min before the baby was born. And that was her first. I just really hope everything goes well for you! You've read the ina may book, right?
