24-6-2009 - No dessert if you dont finish your food!!!

My mood while writing this blog:
Ok

Ok, so Neil and I have a little issue.

One of them being, he says that the kids cant have any dessert if they dont finish their food.

I on the other hand, think that they should not make pigs of themselves and eat everything thats on their plates, just so that they can get pudding, cos that is how children become obese later in life, cos they dont know when to stop eating. So, basically if they dont finish their food, but they want cake and custard, I would give it to them. Cos I know that I would probably do something like that. I mean, who doesn't leave space for pudding????

I also cannot sit and eat dessert infront of my children, knowing that they cant get any and Neil has no problem with it. I feel that if Ty cant get pudding, then none of us should have. How can you sit there and eat a chocolate, while this 3 year old is staring at you and not give him any.

So, every night when they get in bed, when I tuck them in, I give them a little sweet or a piece of chocolate. Last night, Neil was sleeping, so I tucked them in and gave them a sweet. When I got to bed, he's like, I hope you didnt give him any sweets cos he didnt finish his food, and I'm like, No. I felt so bad about lying, but Ty's my baby. I cant be nasty to him, dunno if I'm doing more damage than good, i know you're not supposed to play one parent up against the other, and that is probably why i felt so guilty, what should I do!!!!!

Then, from the time we get home in the evening, till we go to bed, Neil ORDERS Ty around. Go and put your slippers on, pick up your ball and put it in your room, dont play in the lounge, dont bouce your ball in the house and Ty gets so annoyed, because I feel, he feels that he's being picked on. I've learned that, because I am a Cancer baby and so is Ty and I know that we dont like being ordered around, if you ask me nicely, then i'll do it, but dont give me orders. The trick is, making them want to do what you want them to do, not giving them orders like Hitler, cos then they just get rebellious.

I asked him to try and be more polite and ask him nicely, so he's agreed to that!

But the food issue!!!!!!

I know Im late on this blog but I felt I needed to comment. I think what you are doing is wrong> I think if daddy and you don't agree then you two need to make a better agreement somehow. I think you sneaking them sancks when daddy sayd no is the worst. My stepson does the samething but its the other way around, he ask me for something and I say no and then goes downstairs and ask his daddy. It burns me up. teh bad part about it is he does not tell his daddy that I already said no. So he gets what he ask for and it drives a wedge between me and my son . Its' done on purpose.

i hate to say it but we do the same if they done eat all their food then no snack later. So when i make up the kids plates i only put enough on the plate that i know that they will eat. Then if they want seconds they can and at least they get their snack at the end. well atleast he did agree to stop ordering him around thats a step forrward right.

I can see why you are annoyed with the constant ordering around... thats definately not good. I would try and talk to him about that, without getting angry, just explain it like you have explained it to us. Regarding the desert issue... I completely agree with Neil. Im certain that pudding and other deserts will make your children obese long before finishing their nutritious supper... I was always raised that if you dont finish your supper you dont get desert. If you have extra room for desert, then you obviously have more room for real food, which is far better for you. I dont think you and Neil should not have desert just because Ty cant. I think its an important lesson about nutrition to make sure that only people who finish their healthy food can have a special treat afterwards. Also, just another thing I thought of - giving him sugar as you tuck him in probably isnt doing him or his teeth any favors. Just try and work through this with Neil, hopefully you can come to an understanding about it. If he is giving Ty too much food, then maybe you can compromise by decreasing his portions so that he can learn about successfully finishing, and enjoying desert with you. Take care :)
