| 03-4-2012 - My Birth Story | My mood while writing this blog:Very happy but tired |
Hi everyone, hope your all well?? Cant believe this is the first chance i`ve had to type my birth story - my twins will be 8wks on Thursday!! I am having the most enjoyable experience but it is sooo tiring, I have NO time to myself, but I absolutely love it! I am truly blessed xx
I was admitted to hospital on Wednesday 8th February with severe swelling, high BP & high levels of protein in my urine - just made sense to get the babys out as I was really starting to struggle with the pregnancy. My husband came to the hospital at 9:30am on Thursday 9th February & we sat waiting for an induction slot. I was taken over to my room at 11:45 - I started crying when I walked in the room & seen the 2 baby stations set up with all the medical equipment for all the 'what ifs' i`d been advised about.
My midwife came in & introduced herself as Ronnie. She put me on the baby monitor for over an hour but I was in quite alot of pain with the way Thomas was lying in my ribs that I couldnt get comfy on the bed & she couldnt get a true reading of their heartbeats as when I was in pain their readings went up, so around 1:10 she inserted the induction gel & told me she would check me after 6hrs to see if anything had happened. She told me 2nd labours usually happen more quickly so I asked her if I would have had the babies before her shift ended & she said 'not a chance' as she was handing me over to the night team at 7:30pm - I told her I had asked the midwife during my first labour the same thing & she had said no & I had delivered Evie an hour before her shift finished...I love a challenge haha
By 1:30pm I was desperate to pee but couldnt even sit on the toilet as my underneath was hurting from the tingling sensation off the gel so I was getting abit upset. I rang my mum & told her I had been started off so she could come up the hospital & wait it out with us. She arrived about 2:15pm after promising my sisters she would keep them updated. I couldnt lie down so I sat on the end of the bed & asked hubby to lie behind me & be on back rubbing duty haha so when i said 'rub' he rubbed, & when I said 'stop' he stopped. It was only when my mum realised at 4:10pm I was saying rub about a minute after i`d said stop that she went to get the midwife as she was convinced I was in active labour - I strongly disagreed with her as Ronnie had said the gel would take 6hrs, so when Ronnie came in the room & asked me what was going on I told her I had really strong period pains in the front, very low back pain, & some pressure underneath, so she examined me & told me I was 6cm's dialated haha...I hadnt even known I was having contractions, I had nothing to compare them too as with Evie they didnt start until after my water had been broke & I was glued to the gas & air by then haha So, Ronnie legged it from the room as she said if we didnt get the epidural done asap we would miss the chance & that was something I definately couldnt have done without.
Next thing the room filled with scrubs people & I was raised into the air on the bed & had the epidural put in (I actually had everyone laughing while it was being done but I havent got time to type too much into detail as the babies are starting to mooch haha) but it was all good - I hardly felt anything so I asked the doctor how I knew if it was going to work & he sent an electric shock down my right thigh...I burst out laughing & asked him to do it again & he called me crazy & said it was the first time anyone had reacted to an epidural with laughter - so I offered him some Maltesers haha (I hadnt had any gas & air so cant even blame that haha)
I was all done by around 4:45pm & things seemed to happen quite quickly from then. Ronnie broke my waters (apparently I ruined her shoes so owe her some new ones haha) & I dialated to 10cms before i'd had a chance to get warm as they put lots of cold water through the epidural tube (not sure why??) so i was dithering like crazy. Just after 6:00pm the room filled with double the amount of people - there was 2 lots of 3 baby doctors standing by the baby stations, 3 midwifes, 2 doctors, me, Steven & me mum....14 people in 1 delivery room - Crazy! & I was told to start pushing....
Will have to finish off another time, babies are calling :o) xxxxxxxx
The doctor explained that while I was pushing Maya out, the midwives would lean on my stomach to try & get Thomas to move down & turn naturally into a head down position, but of course its me & nothing is straight forward :o) Needless to say when Maya was born at 6:24pm weighing 6lb 4ozs, all the pushing & shoving from the midwives didnt make any difference & as the doctor had warned me prior to starting delivery, he had to go in (up to near his flippin elbow!!) & grab Thomas to pull him down. Good job I had the epidural as I could feel everything that was going on but nothing hurt thankfully!! The doctor said whichever end he grabbed first would be the way he would be born & I started laughing & joked 'no doubt you'll grab his legs then' & after abit of feeling around in there he said to me 'ave got his legs' Typical! haha. Thomas was delivered at 6:37pm with me half pushing & the doctor half pulling him out. He was placed on my chest & was blue & not breathing, the cord was cut quite quickly & he was whisked over to one of the baby stations. For about 3 & a half minutes every second seemed like an hour as the room was really quiet even though there was so many people in there - I just kept thinking about all the birth programs I love watching & how the baby almost always starts crying after a few minutes of being stimulated so thats what I was waiting for...and then after an eternity I heard what sounded like a little kitten so I called over to the baby station gang & asked if that was Thomas & they said yes...and all the noise in the room started again ----- such a surreal experience!! Thomas weighed 6lb 3ozs but his breathing was quite 'grunty' so he was placed on my chest to try & regulate him - they said the delivery was quite traumatic for him & thats why he was having difficulty correcting his breathing, arr my poor little fella.
After this the room emptied & Ronnie was left on her own to deliver my placentas which she wasnt very pleased about as apparently they split so she couldnt get it all out & had to call the doctor back, who again had to go in up to his elbows to pull out all the bits that had broke apart - they knew there was still some in there as my uterus wasnt contracting... (I only know this as I kept asking how they knew there was still some in there & kept telling the doctor to make sure he got it all out as i'd seen it on the telly what can happen if theres any left in there - he thought this was hilarious! ?? haha) Anyways (not to sound too blase about it) they couldnt stop my bleeding as it wasnt clotting so I lost alot of blood, poor hubby near passed out coz he later told me it was dripping through the bed onto the floor. Sounds like something from a horror film doesnt it haha but am ok now, they got me sorted out & after everything I had been through I didnt even need any stitches - go me!!!! I was SO pleased when the doctor told me I only had a graze as I was dreading being stitched after my last labour - I thought that was more painful than giving birth!
I was completely drained afterwards but it was really nice. I was left in my delivery room until about 3:00am so hubby could stay with me as I couldnt stand up or move as I had absolutely no energy at all so we had a nice cup of tea & some toast & then I was wheeled over to the ward in the bed holding my 2 babas - wasnt I just THE proudest mum in the world!! Steven left the hospital around 4am & I actually managed to have a couple of hours sleep before the mad world of 3 kids began! :o) xxx
